It’s actually quite simple. DV is 4:1:1. When it’s converted to Uncompressed, it becomes 4:2:2 which causes artifacts. There are two ways to do it. The deck can do it (re-capture using SDI), or the Apple DV softare decoder can do it (conforming). The first method automatically smooths out the chroma for you, which can help. The software method does not – which leaves it more “pure”. However, by applying the 4:1:1 chroma smoothing filter, you can achieve virtually the same thing. So the end result is almost identical to what capturing via SDI would give you.
But I always ask people, if quality is so important, why the heck are you shooting on DV in the first place?
Also, I too use and reccomend the Firmtek products.

Gramme Natress did an extensive test on this subject.
The short answer is, it doesn’t matter – provided you apply the 4:1:1 chroma smoothing filter on the DV footage before bumping it up.

Ok, you guys are right. Sorry about that. I got it in there but I had re-route the cable coming out of the connector, and I had to literally bend back that connector. Again, this was not an issue for me with the earlier gen 2.5ghz machines.

Not sure. It probably works for tape to tape transfers. I think Avid might support it, but I don’t know if it works for HD. You can’t use SDTI on a FCP system, you need Firewire.

Thanks, yes capturing the initial footage worked fine. I started on 01:00:00:00, which is an A frame so that makes sense. But batch re-capturing did not work.

You seriously can’t compare Avid Meridian to FCP 4 or 5 w/ a Decklink. That’s a joke. Avid Meridian isn’t dated. It’s unbelievably beyond dated.
Comparing FCP 4 or 5 to a new Nitris system is another story. Although whatever you conclude, I don’t think there’s ANY argument that even comes close to justifying the enourmous price gap between the two. And even if you could justify it, in 2-5 years the Nitris system will become what the Meridian is now – dated and obsolete. Meanwhile for FCP users, the minor cost to upgrade to FCP 7 and a PowerMac G7 puts keeps you on top of the game for pennies to the dollar.

You’re thinking about it too much ;). I’m sure just about everyone has to do this as part of their workflow (native DV editing, Decklink monitoring, DVD output).
The Decklink supports native DV playback on Macs, and I’m 99% sure it can do it in Premiere as well. You don’t have to manually crop or add lines.

No it does not. DVCProHD uses firewire for native transfers. You need the AJ-1200.
