Eric, you’re 100% correct. Its darker than it should be on playback. I’m seeing this as well with Photo-JPEG. Looks like this is happening with any RGB codec.

So darn quiet you can’t tell it is on. Quieter than my G5. And I just added a port multiplier board. Drawback? Not very easy to get the drives in and out of the thing.

One of the things I did was use single-disk fanless SATA enclosures. Just don’t stack them on top of each other or else they’ll get too hot. Newegg has a bunch of them.

I did some more research and it appears it will work flawlessly. In fact the online store “MacMall” categorizes all their 8800 cards as “Mac & PC”.

Sorry for all the suggestions that didn’t help. I thought the Cinewave might be relevant in case it was using it’s own hardware accelerated QT components or something like that.
Quicktime does bump up the gamma on playback for YUV formats. But FCP does the same thing since it just uses Quicktime components:

The only thing I can think at this point is that something is just buggy on your system. This might be worth a support call. I’d tell you to repair permissions, re-install Quicktime, delete your User Account and start a new one, etc. – maybe even re-install FCP 6 to re-install your ProRes components. But I don’t want you to waste time on a wild goose chase. All I can say is that I PROMISE you this problem is not occurring on my system with ProRes. QT and Canvas are 100% identical.

I just put a QT player window of a clip right next to the FCP canvas showing the same clip. They are 100% identical.
Make sure your sequence settings are correct (Make sure its set to render 10-bit YUV), and make sure you have QT 7.1.6.
You said you use a Cinewave. That could be related to your problem. I don’t think that card is supported anymore.

I have to relate to the people who are upset. When I was at NAB, I specifically asked two people at the Apple booth if a G5 was good enough for ProRes and mixed formats. The answer I got was “I’m sure it will be fine”. I looked on the hardware requirements page and as everyone knows there were no specific requirements for ProRes.
ProRes is a big deal to me. For almost 2 years we used PhotoJPEG for everything. ProRes is a significant upgrade in quality. It’s YUV, it’s 10-bit, and it’s closer to being lossless. And I don’t have to hack Final Cut in order to get RT effects with it.
Nobody’s stopping me from asking for a refund. And of course I’m not. But it was a sleazy thing to do IMO. And I can’t help but wonder if ProRes could have been optimized to work well on a PowerPC chip. Its certainly possible they could have made this a non-issue.

I’d call support. I don’t think this is a widespread issue that you’ll find answers to on this forum.

You make a good point. FCP is a nazi about scratch disks. It shouldn’t bother you about a missing capture scratch folder until you actually try to capture something.
What kind of FW drives do you have? You know you can daisy chain them, right? This will free up a port on your Mac.
