I have two firewire ports on my mac and two external harddrives on which I’m editing separate projects. FCP will not allow me to open one of the projects unless both harddrives are plugged in and booted up (they are both on my scratch disk list under preferences, and I get the “drive missing” message when I try to open a project on only one drive). This is a problem when I need to use my second firewire port to capture from the camera.
I would like it if there was a way to set up my preferences so that each project recognized its scratch disk when opened up. At this point, the only solution I can figure is to manually change the preferences each time I switch projects, clearing one of the scratch disks and resetting all of the capture pathways so that FCP will open. There must be an easier way to do this! Thanks for the help, cg.

You make a good point. FCP is a nazi about scratch disks. It shouldn’t bother you about a missing capture scratch folder until you actually try to capture something.

What kind of FW drives do you have? You know you can daisy chain them, right? This will free up a port on your Mac.

Plug the camera into the back of one of the drives, or daisy chain them. When it complains about scratch disks, just click reset scratch disks and choose whatever disk you like. FCP does not keep you from opening a project, even if none of your scratch disks is hooked up.

And yes, we’ve been asking for scratch disks to be a project setting, and NOT a universal setting since version 1.x.
