Did you by any chance change the render resolution to less than 100% to speed things up at any stage of your edit?

It’s in the render control tab of the sequence settings window (Command+0 from the timeline).

  • Thanks guys,

Is there likely to be any advantage in going to a dual Quad-core 2.16 Mac Pro over the single quad? I’ve heard a bit about the future proofing value of 8 cores but is this likely to be a great advantage in FCP?

As for turning off full renders – doesn’t it need to be a full render before export? Easy enough to test I suppose.

    Cheers,

    Sean

July 21, 2009 at 3:40 am in reply to: Budgeting for a new FCP system… suggestions?

My ideal system is the fastest Mac Pro, 8 to 16B RAM, AJA Kona LHi or Kona 3 card, MaxxDigital Expendo SAS-SATA chassis running RAID 5.

But what is the fastest Mac Pro for FCP?

Is a One 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro faster than a Two 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro seeing that FCP doesn’t use all the cores at this time (and who knows when it will?)?

This is what I’m asking myself…

‘The motion blur was due to the fact that the shutter was turned OFF. When on later tests the shutter was ON at 1/50th of a second everything was fine.

So, does this solve the original problem then?

    Just wondering.

If so, can we have a reference to it at THE TOP of this thread FCOL?

    Thanks ;~)

I do it all the time on my C2D MBP 2.16 15″ 3GB RAM.

  • Thanks a million Ty, I’m gonna try to track down a transformer isolator.

I’ll let you know how I get on.

  • Hey thanks for your advice Ty. I’ll take your points one by one…

First try plugging everthing into the same outlet or strip

Everything was coming off the same strip to begin with – Computer (laptop plugged in with three pin Australian plug), 2 x powered speakers and external monitor. I then tried plugging just the monitor power into different outlets.

try rotating each one (unplug, put the plug in the other way)

Australian plugs are different from American ones – you can’t rotate them. Also, everything was plugged in with three pin plugs.

Try running the Mac only on battery
Tried that – it changed the hum but didn’t remove it.

ISOBAR power strip with transformer separated banks
I haven’t been able to find any in Australia.

    Ebtech Hum Eliminator
That’s a possibility, is it anything like this?

SImple three prong-to-two prong converters on grounded power plugs
Is this the kind of thing you’re talking about? I’m a bit suss on this solution and am definitely not comfortable messing around with power plugs.

I’m thinking the isolation transformer is my best bet at this stage.

Is a ground loop inherently dangerous or just a fact of life in some buildings?

    Thanks again,

    Sean

  • Ok, so I’ve found a ground loop isolator that sounds like it’ll solve my problem here…

    https://www.minidisc.com.au/xitel-ground-loop-isolator-p-423.html

My next question is, if that fixes the problem, do I still have to worry that there is a ground loop problem in the building? Is it inherently dangerous or just a fact of life?

I understand that a power conditioning unit would be another possible fix and probably a good idea generally but to solve this problem, at AU$60 v AU$500+ I’d rather go with the cheap option at this stage.

    Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks to everyone for their input.

    Sean McPhillips

  • Ok, so I have a bit of work ahead of me to figure this out.

I’ll post here again once I’ve had a go at it.

    Cheers,

    Sean
