Ooops sorry. I find that all the Avid terminology is burned permanently into my brain.

[Tom Wolsky] “Was the PSD file made on a PC? The layer structure will not be maintained in FCP.”
Really? I’ve never found this to be true in the past. Though I haven’t done it since FCP version 5.

I’m not sure I understand how that would work as Motion seems to use the transparency to create an alpha. Anyway I’ve given up in frustration and will just do it in Final Cut Pro using FXScript swing with Basic3D. Will have to wait for Motion3(D) I guess.

Unfortunately not. Motion automatically crops to the layer. If I create pixels outside the rectangle I need it works but as soon as things start rotating the dummy pixels come in to view.

I use transmit. I like the way it integrates with widgets.

Beautiful lateral thinking that. I tried it and yes it works. Only one problem. As soon as you crop the object the Basic 3D moves the axis point. arrrrrgggh. I can see I’m probably going to have to create each page with a couple of dummy pixels to get this to work. Thanks for the suggestion.

July 14, 2005 at 7:05 am in reply to: Uncompressed DV?

Agree with you Walter except for one thing. Rendering introduces compression if you are working in DV space.
I have done a lot of work with both DV and Uncompressed and from what I’ve seen there is no comparison.

    The FIrewire way:
You have your dv footage captured with firewire. (no loss)
You import what would normally be pristine graphics and animations to the DV Codec. COMPRESSION
You render these things together. COMPRESSION
You output back to tape. (No loss)

The SDI way: You capture your DV footage as uncompressed 8 or 10bit video. (No loss)
You import your graphics and animations, (No loss),
You render these things together, (No loss)
You go back out to DV-Cam tape. COMPRESSION

It is one less pass of compression. I have done the tests and it does look much better I can assure you.

Yes having the same problem. Have a two minute clip that I have used 10 seconds of. Can not for the life of me get FCP to reduce the size to only that which has been used in the sequence.

Im not sure about this. My feelings are if you have the time. Redigitise your footage. Yes going in native firewire from DVCam is fine. But it sounds like you might have a bit of rendering to do? If this is so then uncompressed will give you the best results. Graphics, text and animations always come up better. Redigitising will avoid any problems you might encounter with field dominance as well. I’m assuming your running SDI to the DSR80 so there really should be no difference compared to Firewire.

  • Don’t know much about this but we just did a job using the varicam as well but before we did we were warned of this problem. The camera man was instructed to shoot only half a tape and record the rest of the tape with colour bars. I was amazed to hear this. Apparently it’s a bug with FCP 4.5. So the only way to solve it is to either capture twice what you want or (what I did) dub the varicam footage to Digi before capturing. Maybe it’s time to upgrade to v5.
