Where can i find out more about the differences – I know about scsi and have a chassis with 8 drives in but they are too small and I need to do Uncompressed HD and dont think theyll be quick enough – Fibre channel or SATA it is then!!!!

I edit on both (I’m a freelancer in the UK) and IMHO Avid is a better and faster cutting machine – the interface is better than FCP’s (but I started on it 10 years ago!) However FCP Blows Avid out of the water if you need to do more than simple cutting. As a compositor, it’s good, titling (with Livetype and Motion) is way better and it’s interaction with other software is streets ahead of Avid. If you are using your NLE for editing and finishing as most of us are now then FCP is superior – both in price and features. Here in the UK many people still feel its too new to trust (I cut and onlined a 50min doc for C4 in 2000 and didnt tell any one it was fcp) but the BBC are replacing many of their Avids with FCP.

OK – I’m confused – PCI X is different from PCI express? Is my new dual 2GB soon to be obsolete? Will the Multibridge studio run on the G5 I Have now? (Has PCI express)

MMMmmm…..Wouldnt it be a good Idea if drive manufacturers put the words SPIN UP DRIVES BEFORE USE and ALWAYS LEAVE A THIRD OF DRIVE EMPTY in Large Friendly letters on their drives so people like me dont get into these problems and the company I’m working for dont have to shell out over

mmmm. My Experience is that an inordinate number of these drives are going bad. Maybe it’s just a batch we got here in the UK
Thanks for the response Matt – I’ve got one dead drive and the people I’m working for have a couple – do we send them to Lacie or the People we purchased them from? (They’re both out of Warranty) -
The fact is that these lacies are dodgy!!!
The internet is full of people who have had problems with them – mostly with that ole clicking sound followed by the drive dismounting itself (and all fcp media going off line) while it thinks about what it should do next, then spinning back up when the two drives inside decide they’ll communicate with each other. – This seems to get worse untill one day the drive wont spin up at all or the power supply seems to pack up.
The company I’m working for have just bought a different drive for me to play with tomorrow. I’m sure it wont be a lacie!!!!

your faith is admirable – Out of the 10 odd drives Ive worked with (Im Freelance) in the last year 30% have developed faults. – they contain IDE drives and are made of cheap components – dont trust them skywalker!!!!
