December 7, 2005 at 4:33 am in reply to: HELP PLEASE AE6.5 ERROR !! After Effects error: an unspecified AVI or DirectShow error occurred.Sometimes lowering your memory cache in After Effects can help. When I get that same error I lower my cache to 45% before rendering. It usually helps. Also, sometimes I’ll simply render out to a targa sequence, then if I get the crash, I can start AE again and continue the same render (making sure that Overwrite Files is turned off) from where the crash happened. At least then I don’t lose the time I spent rendering before the crash. Once the whole sequence is rendered, I bring it back into AE and then render to an AVI. These aren’t permanent fixes, just work arounds.

If you have any intentions of upgrading to AE 7, you may want to wait to see if they’ve improved the masking features at all. I’ve also considered buying Silhouette Roto, but I keep forcing myself to wait. It shouldn’t be too long

All good points. I admit that I should have thought my response out a little better before hitting “Post Direct”. I mostly use “Key Out Unsafe” as well, as I like the visual feedback I get. I have to admit that I’m not that great at reading a vector scope so I like this option of seeing unsafe colors.

Just my 2 cents but I use Test Gear for my software meters, as well, I always finish off by applying an adjustment layer with a Broadcast Safe filter over the whole project.

A couple of times I’ve almost bit the bullet and bought Silhouette Roto for AE but I keep holding on hoping that AE 7.0 has some better masking options like B-splines. For now, whenever I need to do any hard core roto work, I switch to Combustion 4 wich has beautiful B-spline control. The problem is that I hate switching between apps like that.

November 18, 2005 at 2:05 pm in reply to: does after effects render only what is absolutely necessary? render efficiency…One way to get around the out of memory/image buffer errors is to lower your cache down below 50%. I usually run my cache at around 80% but everytime I get the image buffer error when rendering, I lower my cache (after trying the Purge All and whatever else may help, which never does) down to 45% I’m able to render without any problems. It renders a bit slower but I don’t get the crash.

ya, actually I just got that after posting my response. I should have spent a little more time reading his question.
