OT – Best rotoscoping solution
Posted by S2nami on November 23, 2005 at 7:31 amWe are soon to retire our HAL’s as the cost of maintenance is nutty. We have been looking into Mirage, Shake, and …um…Photoshop as replacements.
Does anyone out there have an opinion one way or another as to which software (on Mac g5) would be the best option?
We do a LOT of rotoscoping.

BTW Adobe have apparently licenced the curious software and are expected to impliment it in a future version of AE, don’t know if it’s expected in the forthcoming v7.0 tho’

November 23, 2005 at 1:54 pmA couple of times I’ve almost bit the bullet and bought Silhouette Roto for AE but I keep holding on hoping that AE 7.0 has some better masking options like B-splines. For now, whenever I need to do any hard core roto work, I switch to Combustion 4 wich has beautiful B-spline control. The problem is that I hate switching between apps like that.

November 24, 2005 at 7:04 pmI’m curious where you heard Adobe will be integrating any gFx technology into AE. I haven’t heard ANY announcement to that effect.
It’s usually not a good idea to wait for unannounced product features.

November 29, 2005 at 5:46 pmNowhere in that release does it say that any gFx technology will go into Adobe After Effects. It says something vague about “future Adobe software”. But that does not necessarily mean AE. Nothing at all is mentioned about AE 7 either.
So again, I wonder why people get the impression this stuff is going into AE 7?

*Most* people would suspect that were Adobe to license the gFx engine (which they did) and then put it into “future Adobe software” (which they are), that they would in all likelihood not put it into InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, Ilustrator or Premiere but into a tool like After Effects or perhaps a standalone app (which I doubt).
But anyone who knows the Securities & Exchange Commission law knows why major publicly-held corporations veil their statements in generalities. They have to or they can be held liable for all kinds of things in this litigious world we live in.
At the rate that Adobe has been acquiring plug-in technologies over the years (which they have), and dumping them into After Effects — the clear market leader in its field — it takes little “mental venturing” to see why most people think we’ll shortly see gFx inside AE.
As a member of the Silhouette development team, you are entitled to your beliefs but being a competitor — and one whose market could be adversely effected by an AE/gFx release — I expect that your argument is less than given from a place of neutrality or balance.

November 29, 2005 at 7:19 pmHmmm, ok. You’re certainly entitled to believe whatever you want. Call it “common sense”, “intuition”, a “gut feeling”, or “because I want it to be true”. But those things don’t necessarily make it so.
But my original argument – basing purchasing decisions on vapor not being terribly good business decisions – still holds.
