  • [Joe Loria] “Also, what if I want to change ISO and other settings that I can only do with a raw file format?”

Why don’t you do a proxy workflow in X and reconnect to your raw files when going over to CC via fcpxml? I do this with any 4k projects (or multicam) I come across. Create your proxies in X or Resolve and definitely cut in X. Link to raw, finish and output in Resolve ( I agree with David that if you can get the finished version out of R12.5, there should be no reason for going back to FCPX).

Counter to what has been stated above, X is a far more solid, robust and faster editor than Resolve is and it’s organizational features are much better. Resolve also borrowed a LOT from X but still has a ways to go (IMHO) to be a “heavy-lifting’ editor. I will say that R12.5 is much better than earlier versions in terms of features and response.

  • [Oliver Peters] “That begs the question: was what was shown simply a ginned up demo version that isn’t anywhere close to release? If so, that speaks pretty poorly of Apple’s development effects.

Quite a reach here, Oliver. Adobe got you on the payroll? 😉

  • if I was paying monthly ransom to Adobe and Avid, yes I would be concerned about a perceived lack of development. After all, $50/month (I wonder which company will “blink” and raise the monthly rate first?) you want to see these incremental releases.

Apple said later this year, and that is cool by me. As I have stated, I have work right now that X is the best tool for. Not going to gnash my teeth (or pay monthly fees) over Apple’s way of doing things.

  • I hope the secrecy is because there is someone with a strong vision of what the product will be as it grows and evolves. How is this different from other companies? And didn’t a bunch of folks see some of the coming features under NDA at NAB? Why release details early to start a debate before release? Does that show commitment?

As far as the article itself, I saw nothing of real importance or revealing. And, doing her/his “raise your hand” poll method, he/she is talking about a niche that is dominated by Avid anyway. And we all, at least most of us on this forum, have multiple editors on our systems. What was the point of that last paragraph? IMHO, this is a non-story that almost anyone could have written.

[Tim Wilson] “is your footage being shot in those formats, or converted for post?”

Shot in those formats. Convert to proxy if doing multicam or 4k work.

Canon C100/300, Sony FS100, Sony F7, iPhone, various DSLR’s. Not much Red anymore except for a bit of Epic every now and again.

I shoot a bit, but mostly comes from DP’s that a production company will hire for an agency. Multiple cameras is now the norm and I usually make a multicam clip right off the bat. It’s actually taking longer to get to the creative edit process than it did in film/dailies days because there is just so much more footage coming in now.

    Motto: bill by the hour.

[Darren Roark] “With Resolve, if you are using it for ‘pro stuff’ you need to buy a thing from them.

But where do you cut off the “free stuff”? So many people like Resolve because it’s free. And it can kind of edit. Where does BMD say “no, that’s it. Any more and you pay $999”.
