[Bob Zelin] “one day, everyone will know how to edit, and it will all be over for most of us”

I heard this from linear editors when Avid camp around. And then from Avid editors when FCP-Legacy came around. Now Premiere editors when (that non-professional ) Project Rush comes out (I’m kidding here of course)? And so it goes.

I think for most of us it’s not knowing “how to edit”: anyone can learn a software. Its about knowing how to tell a compelling story in an efficient timeframe. My answer back then and now is always the same: Be better. Be good enough so your clients can’t afford to be looking elsewhere no matter what the cost. If there is a kid out there who is better, then they deserve the work.

Dunno. Is any of it really “new”?

  • [Morten Ranmar] “Well, if they were so scared, would they not include as many new tools in their package as possible, instead of craving a separate subscription for this?”

I would rather they create an a la carte model: Pick 5 software from the cloud for a fixed price. Or Sling model. Why do I need to have (or pay for the development of) the rest, most of which I will never even open up, no less use.

Certainly will look into it. I use Pond 5 mostly and have just started using it’s app for FCPX. While early in the game, I really like how the App makes things very easy to download into your Library and then purchase.

  • I think Apple Talk is a poor choice. It solves nothing and muddies the water. I certainly get taking FCPX out of the name as a good thing, but changing to Apple Talk doesn’t make a lot of sense.

I prefer the general direction of “NLE’s and General Discussion” or something that captures the topics on the forum in a better way.

Avid has a forum called “General Discussion and Off-Topic”. Maybe the Cows version could be “General NLE Discussion and Off-Topic”

[Jeremy Garchow] “AAA Hot Air Central”

Brilliant. “when you need to blow off some team, visit the fine folks at AAA Hot Air Central. We’re there for you…”

FCPX can do that, as Steve demonstrated. Another feature…that is.
