“I use mpeg streamclip and set it to transcode to Prores 422- at max quality you’ll be looking at some big files though!
”IMHO, ProRes HQ is total overkill for material taken from DVD’s. It’s probably overkill for 99% of what most folks are cutting.
In the case of a ripped DVD, there is only so much information to be had from the source, and standard ProRes easily exceeds this. As you noted ProRes HQ results in really big files, which is really the only extra you will get over standard quality ProRes.Scott Sheriff

November 3, 2010 at 5:35 pm in reply to: OT – Attack of the As? Mail is showing As instead of E-mail content?I haven’t had this exact problem, but I have had other Mail app weirdness, that I found frustrating. I fixed it by switching to Mozilla Thunderbird. I like it a lot better, and it isn’t as twitchy.
You might try it, it’s free and Open Source, and a seamless switchover.

November 2, 2010 at 10:56 pm in reply to: looking to put together a decent home systemOne of the things a lot of folks don’t think about is all the ‘little’ stuff. A good edit workstation desk, UPS, audio monitors, lighting, storage, tablet and other input devices. This stuff adds up quick, so the more you already have, the better.
Get as much speed as you can, but it won’t do much good if you don’t have any cash leftover for decent audio monitoring, or a place to work at.
I would urge everyone thinking about building their own system (which means spending your money) to plan it all out on paper, and really think it through.Scott Sheriff

“So your comment about disgruntled users at forums, was that a joke or have you actually read some. If so, any particular forum I should check out? Any links perhaps?
”Sorry, I should have included a link, here it is:
https://forums.creativecow.net/sonyvegasWhen viewing this forum in the 1 month view I saw about a dozen flames on the first browser page. Could be op errors, or real bugs, I don’t know. We get the same thing here in the FCP forum. Just saying asking FCP folks about Vegas may not get you all the info to make an informed choice.
I used ‘crashing’ as a search term in the Vegas forum and got about 700 hits.
https://forums.creativecow.net/search.php?q=crashing&f%5B%5D=24Not trying to bash Vegas. They all crash. But if you are thinking about making a move to this platform, this is something to check into.

Hard to answer.
What is a ‘home system’? My ‘home system’ is significantly better than the local broadcast stations best FCP suite. Working from home is not the same as ‘hobbyist’.IMHO more, faster processors is always better. Even if FCP can’t use all the cores now, other apps can. And eventually FCP probably will too.
But…
Whats your budget?
What do you already own? Are you starting from scratch?
What is your experience and skill level?
What kind of clients and work will you expect to do?
How long do you expect to go without upgrading your system?
How long to you expect to take to make back the purchase of the system?
Unless this is strictly a hobby, your best bet is to do a biz plan before you plunk down the cash.
Everybodys situation is unique, so there isn’t really a single ‘whats best’ answer.Scott Sheriff

October 31, 2010 at 5:41 pm in reply to: follow-up to FCP vs Vegas (wondering about QUALITY)I give a big thumbs up on Shane’s #1 and #2 answers…wait…thumbs up on all of them!
Avid, FCP, AE, and even Media 100 don’t really have to ‘prove themselves’. These products have been around long enough that even a modest amount of research will tell you if one of these apps will work for you, as they are pretty much ‘the standard’. Ask the Vegas users how well it stacks up in day to day use against any of these.
So what Frank really should do is take a trip over to the Cows Vegas forum, as that would be a better place for this discussion. There he will find the answer.

“(yawn, reminds me of the cube we had to build with single channel dve’s way back when… was “cool” for a week, then everybody wanted it… except it took more hard work than merely dropping an icon in a timeline and hit alt-R he he)”I’m diggin that sarcasm and the dve cube reference. All you have to do is scroll down on any weeks posting to find the same light leaks questions and answers. There was a guy a couple of days ago even posted a source for free light leak clips.
If you have a working 1st gen ADO, I still have my 5″ floppy with the ‘cube’, and maybe the ‘page turn’ on it, if you want to borrow it sometime.

Better than refills.
Google “continuous ink system”. Better answer than refilling if you do a lot of inkjet printing. Big quality difference on these kits, so do your homework.Scott Sheriff

I guess I just don’t get why you want to waste time doing benchmarks, when you think FCP is wasting your time now. Wouldn’t that time be better spent doing those renders?
And wouldn’t the amount of time it takes to render, or export any given material be the ‘final answer’?
Just sayin’Scott Sheriff
