  • [Marv Marvin] “What do you think the purpose of communities like this is?”

IMO, You are way off base. This is mostly a professional users forum for colleagues to exchange tips and idea’s.
It is not Intro to Production 101 at your local 2 year school’s MassComm program.
If you want to take the OP from the “I don’t own or know how to use a camera” stage to the “I need a finished video presentation” stage, feel free.
But I don’t think that is the purpose of this forum, or any of the others here.
Perhaps Ron might chime in with his thoughts.

I completely agree with Tom. The OP is asking for a recommendation, and considering the circumstances, the best, and only recommendation is to hire someone with experience to do this. Especially if you want professional looking results.
Sometimes people are just looking for the ‘easy button’, and have completely unrealistic expectations. I think it is fair and proper to point this out, instead of leading them on some fantasy that they can learn several large skill-sets overnight from a couple of posts on a forum.
You can go down the thread and read my reply to the OP, if you like.

  • [Andrea Woogerd] “I am brand new to video production and I need to make a marketing video for high-end engineering tools. Does anyone have any suggestions on classes I could take or online tutorials to look at for the basics on how to do this project? Basic tips are also appreciated.”

I’m not clear on if it is your tools that you want to make a video for, or if you have been hired by someone to do this.
Either way, you are probably going to think I’m a jerk for saying this, but you need to hire a professional to do this.
I’m basing this opinion on this post, plus this post by you in the JVC camera forum.
I am looking to purchase my first video camera. It will be used to market high-end engineering tools. I need something that is preferably on the cheaper side and that can be easily operated by a beginning student.

So if this is your product, and you want to have a professional looking presentation to match the quality of the product, you need to hire someone with experience. Not DIY, and not some unnamed student.

If you have been hired by someone, you are doing them a great disservice by attempting to take on a project with no experience, and then charging them money. Period, end of story.

My dogs asked me to reply to this. The resent any association with this software.
They consider it more of an albatross. Or a dodo.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
I would say go with whats in your budget, since that isn’t really enough info to get into any detail about what would be best for your situation. The camera is only one small link in a chain.
If you’re really looking for specifics, do a search on the forum and you will see others asking the same type of question. Have a look at those, you might see something in there that will work for you. Or at least look at what info to post about your requirements.

  • [Lindsay Simpson] “The only success I have had so far is when I am zoomed 100%. I can achieve a crisp focus, but as a back away the image is quickly lost to blur. Is this related to the Macro feature of the lens or perhaps the lens/camera connection? Maybe it was jostled during transfer.”

    Hi,
Sounds like the back focus is out.
But before you adjust it, make sure the lens is not in the macro position, and is firmly in the ‘normal’ detent.
If that is as it should be, then you need to set the back focus.
Be sure to use minimal lighting during the back focus adjustment so you can run the lens wide open.

That was unnecessary. Rehashing that old stuff doesn’t help. We all need to try to move on from the heated stages of phase #1 “getting heard” to phase # 2 more thoughtful attempts to get things fixed ASAP.”

    David,
Fair enough. That probably sounded more heated than was my intent. And you’re right that it’s time to try and get something done about this.
    It’s all good.

[Michael Largé] “I usually remain quiet but there’s a nasty snobbery on these forums ever since FCPX released that’s become quite uncomfortable. I have zero problem with people venting or feeling betrayed by Apple and I believe they should be allowed to communicate this freely.”

I think you are completely 180 degrees out of phase.
You can find tons of posts here where people are discussing missing features, or the dislike of the UI, and someone will jump in the fray to defend apple by saying something like “I’ve never used XML and never will”, “The timeline is an editing paradigm from last century” or “Isn’t it time to quit using tape and get into this decade”. Comments like these, often with plenty of inflammatory words (old, Luddite, fear, paranoid, etc) put in quotes or brackets with the specific purpose of demeaning those that find the new version a POS, unsuitable for broadcast, or commercial film work. These posts generally go OT, heading in the direction of this is our playground apple made for us, and we are glad these antique features were left out, because “that is so last century”.
The elitist apple lovers and defenders have done this time and time again on this forum, and basically opened themselves up to this criticism of being amateurs and youtubers through their own postings. I have no sympathy for them. None at all.

    [walter biscardi] “Why ask?”

It does seem like the amount of posts in this forum has dropped off.
So if your a casual viewer that had your Final Cut rug yanked out from under you by apple a couple weeks ago, the stability and longevity of a forum like this might cross your mind.
It just shows the depth of the uncertainty created by how poorly apple is handling this.
