You can pull a chroma key from any color. CK green is just a better choice because there is very little of that color pigment in out skin tones. Ultimatte paint shading is optimized for the that use, but isn’t really superior. Rosco CK paint, or really any green matte finish paint in that general shade will work in a pinch. Take your Rosco chip card down to home depot, and have them color match it if you can’t find, or afford CK paint.
The real difference in pulling a good key is more about the lighting, not really the paint. The more even the key wall is, the better. Second, keep the subject as far away from the wall as practical to avoid reflected green spill from the wall hitting the subject. If that can’t be avoided, a light magenta gel in the subject backlight to offset green spill sometimes helps. -
I agree with all the ‘don’t need certification’ opinions. That certificate doesn’t magically make you an editor.

I shoot everything in HD 16×9, and deliver in 16×9 SD DVD. SD is very much alive. 4×3 is whats dead.

What is good editing? Lots of answers to this.
Good editing, like good camera work, never draws attention to itself, and remains invisible. Example. Like the way your vision might shift around at a concert. You don’t just stare at the lead singer for the entire show. You look at the stage, the singer, the guitar, the crowd, back to the stage, and so on. In your mind it appears seamless. Good editing should appear seamless as well.
Anytime someone watching your work says to themselves “wow that was a cool edit/camera move/effect” or whatever, they have stopped following your story, and it isn’t all that cool after all. Even worse when its because it was a bad edit, like a jump cut.
If you edit long enough you develop a little thing inside your head that makes you jump when there is a bad edit, even if you are watching something casually. It just takes ‘seat time’.
It also helps to watch your stuff once without the sound, and listen to your sound editing without watching. -

Slightly OT
When you buy FCS2 or 3,do you have the right to install on as many computers as you want?
I assumed (maybe incorrectly) that for the purchase price, you were paying for one license use.
I saw several posts in this thread recommending using one license copy on several computers, technical issues aside.
Any thoughts on this? -
Now that the pdf (thanks) issue has been resolved. I have to say the ‘start from scratch upgrade’ advice has me leaning towards not upgrading. If FCS was the only ap on my system drive it would be NBD, but who is in that situation?. Then when Snow comes out, just do it all over again. Money and time wasted vs what workflow improvements you get. The workflow improvements probably win in the end, but still annoying.
I have to agree that this is an issue that Apple should address, and seems very ‘windows 95-esque’. I would gladly pay an additional 100 bucks for the upgrade to have this resolved.Yeah, I know, who’s twisting my arm to upgrade……….

I agree with the “don’t buy gear, unless you need it” opinion. Street racers used to say “Run what you brung”. Editing is not about the gear, or FX. It’s about where you make the cut. Good editors can bang out something interesting going ‘machine to machine’ on a couple of Quad’s if they have to.
