Stick with XP. There’s a reason Dell and many other OEM sellers have had to continue offering XP as an available OS with their machines – demand. Adoption of all flavors of Vista is lagging far behind Microsoft’s desired migration pace. Compatibility issues and the need to totally upgrade your hardware (because Vista is such a resource hog) are the two top reasons people list for NOT changing from XP to Vista. And yes, you’ll have difficulty getting your machine to boot to a stable Windows environment if you try 32-bit XP with 4 GB of RAM installed. I am running 3GB with 32-bit XP, very stable. But add that 4th GB and no dice.

Have seen people post here saying “no problems running CS3 under XP64”. However, I called Adobe Tech Support and asked the same question. They recommended strongly against it.
I had been thinking of changing to XP64 in order to use more RAM. Newer PC MOBOs will support up to 8GB of ram, if you use 2GB sticks. But only practical for 64 bit apps. Of which there are basically none. It’s pretty annoying, too, since the 64-bit architecture is YEARS old now. However, I’ll coast for now. I’d go MAC, but have too much $$$ invested in PC software to switch. Guess I could go BootCamp…..

And remember: you’ll save tons of $$ if you buy the basic CPU configuration you want, and NO upgraded components. Apple want $699 for 4GB of 667 RAM…. same 4 GB is $119 from NewEgg. Apple also want $699 for a 750 GB SATA internal HD. I just bought a WD 750GB 16MB cache HD for $189 less than 1 month ago, also from NewEgg.
Save yourself the $ and upgrade it with parts from online retailers, use the $ you save for cool plugins and 3rd party FX.

If you are able to boot XP 32bit with 4 gb of ram installed, please post details here. I run 3gb on XP, and to my knowledge, you CANNOT get XP 32 bit OS to boot/recognize 4GB of ram, regardless of what “switch” you enable.
Also, Adobe does NOT recommend using XP-64 bit if you’re running CS3, I called them and spoke directly to tech support on that one.
If you are going to make this a dedicated workstation you’d probably be smart to buy a MAC and get multiple cores and load it up with RAM. You can always run BootCamp when you need to use your Windows programs….

It’s my understanding that Windows can only address RAM above 3GB if you have XP-64 or Vista-64 bit installed. I could not get Windows to boot with 4 GB installed. Adobe Tech Support specifically does NOT recommend XP 64 bit for use with CS 3, I called them and asked. I don’t know about Vista (cough*BUGGY RESOURCE HOG*cough.
I have XP 32 bit with 3 gb of RAM – so is CS3 AE not using that extra GB of memory?
If not, I’ll tag myself onto this post and say “how can I get AE CS3 to use ALL my RAM?”

You’re kidding, right? I’d give my left arm for 16GB of ram, but alas, PC with only 3. I can’t even use 4GB, because that would require XP-64 bit OS, and apparently Adobe does NOT recommend using XP-64 w/CS3…. that thing will SCREAM….

That makes sense, I was maxing out the row/column settings at 31 each to get a fine enough grid. I’ll try puppet and liquify fx tonight, much appreciated!

Hmm, so I can apply the puppet tool to an image imported say, as a TARGA, TIF or PNG? Cool, I thought puppet worked best on say, particles? But then, I AM a noob, LOL…. thanks, I’ll give it a try, my processor is ok, it’s an AMD 4400 dual core with 3GB of RAM and a 10K Raptor drive behind it. LOL, no 8-core Mac with a bazillion GB of RAM, alas….

May be close to Raptor performance, but quieter. And how can you not lover 750gb?
