  • Using Mesh Warp to animate still pics?

Posted by Scott Keck on November 30, 2007 at 7:48 pm

Hi, I’ve got several high res stills of CGI animated characters that I’m trying to animate “just enough” for an animatic. Raising their eyebrows, frowning, etc. I’m messing with Mesh Warp to do this, but I wonder if anyone has a better (i.e. less time consuming) idea? Or could I create some kind of Mesh Warp plugin with a slider, etc.? Bit of an AE noob. I have CS3, fyi. Thoughts from the lurking geniuses of these forums gratefully accepted….. ;-D

    Check out the puppet tool.
It is very useful for this sort of thing as long as you don’t overdo it.
It is a little processor intensive.

Hmm, so I can apply the puppet tool to an image imported say, as a TARGA, TIF or PNG? Cool, I thought puppet worked best on say, particles? But then, I AM a noob, LOL…. thanks, I’ll give it a try, my processor is ok, it’s an AMD 4400 dual core with 3GB of RAM and a 10K Raptor drive behind it. LOL, no 8-core Mac with a bazillion GB of RAM, alas….

Also try liquify for these types of facial movement instead of mesh warp. Far more controllable if you’re trying to do an eyebrow lift, or lips pursing together, etc. Gives more controlled movement instead of needing a huge amount of rows and columns in mesh warp which can really bog down your renders.

That makes sense, I was maxing out the row/column settings at 31 each to get a fine enough grid. I’ll try puppet and liquify fx tonight, much appreciated!
