Thanks for that Edward. I downloaded the platinum version and so far so good. I’ve had some success capturing and exporting. I need to practice awhile before I figure the best settings.
I also downloaded Cineform HDLINK and was able to capture a clip. It made me a nice intermedate CFHDCAP.AVI file that I can view with Windows Media Player. It imports into Vegas, but when dragged onto the timeline it only appears as a red bar instead of the usual picture icon(s). In the preview window only blackness appears. In the PROJECT MEDIA window I right click on the CFHDCAP.AVI icon and it shows the following properties:
Attributes: 1440x1080x16
Format:Cineform HD codec 2.5
Field order: upper field first
Pixel aspect ratio: 1.33 (HDV 1080)
Alpha channel: noneCan you help?

[Blast1] “According to the other post you just made you have a onboard fire port, why don’t you get the proper firewire cable”
Extra cost of $30 for a cable.
Besides I really suspect a fresh OS ($10.99 from Dell) install will solve the problems. Also I’ve read on a review site this model having problems with the built in firewire port. Not sure my VIA chipset firewire card is better. I might eventually have to upgrade to a non VIA chipset card, but I’ll first see if the fresh OS install solves the problem(s).
[Blast1] “With the VIA adapter did you install from a disk or let xp load its own drivers?”
oddly there was no disc included with my firewire card so I let XP load the drivers.
Thanks for your help!

Yes. Winxp sp2 media center edition 2005.
I suspect my OS is corrupted based on various other quirkiness. I ran Registry Mechanic from PCTOOLS.com and it found 300+ problems and repaired only half of them. I hope a fresh OS install (ordered replacement OS discs from Dell today) will solve my problems.
Thanks for the input. -
o.k. thanks Blast. The driver file sizes and sheer number of files on the Dell website are kind of daunting. I think I’ll wait for the OS discs to arrive via snail mail. None of the filenames and descriptions really seem to refer to the specific firewire 1394 problem I’m having.

When I insert the firewire card, a “found new hardware” window appears claiming “VIA OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 host controller”.
In device manager an icon appears after inserting the card claiming OHCI but with the dreaded yellow exclamation mark. Soon thereafter computer locks up.
For what its worth this notebook has a built-in firewire port but its 4 pin (doesn’t match my cable). It shows working in Device manager. I tried to disable it (the built in firewire port) thinking it might be conflicting with my PCMCIA firewire card but no luck.
Suggestions?

O.K. Thanks for the advice.
I’ve sucessfully downloaded ppro cs3 trial version and worked with it briefly. There is no HDV option in the “CAPTURE” settings, only DV.
1. Is HDV disabled in the trial version?
Also I had a problem booting up my newly purchased (used) laptop and had to start up in SAFE MODE and revert back to previous working settings. Consequently, I lost PPRO CS3 and had to re-download from the WWW. Now I can’t figure how to launch the app. I followed the instructions in the readme file. I opened the setup.exe file and it seems to have done its thing and placed a Adobe CS3 folder on the desktop, but I can’t find a “launch application” icon anywhere within the Adobe CS3 folder.
2. How do I launch Adobe Premiere?

Thanks for the thoughtful response Curtis. Lots to consider. I think I need to start slowly with simple projects and see where I can go from there.

Thats interesting. The P965 motherboard does not appear on the BM site as an approved motherboard, I wonder why? Are you using a raid controller card or the on board raid? Exactly which motherboard are you using (manufacturer, model number etc.)? Thanks

December 1, 2006 at 10:14 pm in reply to: Capturing 3 DV-Camcorders at once to harddisk with live-picture ?Have you tried capturing more than one HDV stream? I would think this would take even more processor power…maybe a dual or quad core machine? Even if I had two HDV cams I’m sure my single 1.4ghz p4 would not handle it.

Who out there is using there laptop for editing HDV and playback of Windows WMV 720p and/or 1080p hd files. The Windows website has not been updated for some time and is kind of vague about system requirements (calling for 3 ghz or equivalent CPU) but I’d guess some of the latest processor equipped laptops might qualify?
