I just purchased an HDV camcorder (canon hv20), notebook computer (with max resolution of 1280×800)and am now downloading Premiere Pro CS3. I’d like to create some HD files and make them available for free to the general public and friends/family. I’d like to maintain maximum quality and make the files compatible with most users PC’s. Bandwidth is not a huge issue for my server, but not sure how playable a high bandwidth file will be.

    1. Should I use mpg4, or WMV or other? How many mbps? Should I use 1280×720 or 1920×1080?
    2. When recording video on to tape can I mix dv and hdv 30fps with 24fps stuff. Will it capture ok into Premiere as one file?

Let’s start with the HD on the web. There are very few sites that offer HD, because, even compressed, a 5 minutes WMV video at a good quality will easily get close to 100 MBs.

That would take a while even on a fairely fast DSL connection.

What I really mean is that HD just isn’t ready for the web in longer segments. And if you compress it too much you are basically better off with a smaller resolution file as far as quality goes.

I would recommed WMV, or Flash for compatibilty. The bitrate, if you want to use streaming, shouldn’t be above 512 Mbps.

A tape will need to have a single frame rate for continuous footage.

On a side note, forget 24p altogether, unless you are going to film.

    O.K. Thanks for the advice.

I’ve sucessfully downloaded ppro cs3 trial version and worked with it briefly. There is no HDV option in the “CAPTURE” settings, only DV.

    1. Is HDV disabled in the trial version?

Also I had a problem booting up my newly purchased (used) laptop and had to start up in SAFE MODE and revert back to previous working settings. Consequently, I lost PPRO CS3 and had to re-download from the WWW. Now I can’t figure how to launch the app. I followed the instructions in the readme file. I opened the setup.exe file and it seems to have done its thing and placed a Adobe CS3 folder on the desktop, but I can’t find a “launch application” icon anywhere within the Adobe CS3 folder.

    2. How do I launch Adobe Premiere?

Not sure about HDV in the actual trial, but the beta version didn’t have that option.

The launch icon should be in the CS3 folder, or even as standalone under “all programs”. Again, not sure it’s laid out in the trial.

If you can’t find the install icon and have other inherent issues, I would suspect that you may need a clean install of the OS on your laptop. It could also be that Adobe won’t let you reinstall a trial after a system restore. I’m really stabbing in the dark here.
