I guess I thought Vegas updates itself. I haven’t been prompted for an update. Yes, for my next virtual choir project, I plan to handbrake every incoming video, regardless of original specs. I only just discovered handbrake halfway into editing.

Yes, playback usually isn’t an issue, although sometimes there is just a touch of a wait before it plays, but it’s within a reasonable amount most times. Resolution of preview, or even muting video altogether, doesn’t have an effect.

Source videos came from webcams and mobile devices. The sources really span the gamut unfortunately.

The video is really just tagging along with the audio for edits. They will be rendered out individually at the end of the process. Is it possible that Vegas is keeping track of other tracks even though they are muted?

What is the best way to keep Vegas updated?

That is all the tracks involved. I should mention that when I am getting the lagging problems, I only have one track solo’d at a given time during editing. I am not playing multiple tracks. Just a video and audio set.
