Done all of the above. I am in the process of moving some of the media over to another drive.

  • Jeremy, look into the Frame Rate Converter plug-in I believe (I say this with next to no real knowledge on this) that the Varicam shoots everything at 60fps and “flags” the extra/not needed frames. Using the FRG plug you can remove these flaged frames and then have your slo-mo. I think. The plug is either on the Panasonic or Apple sites.

To fit that into a SD video frame (720×480 or 486) is going to reqire you either blow it up and crop or accept black on the sides. I’d probably take it into AE and do your confrom there and then render a movie out to the codec you edit in. Then take it into FCP for the edit.

Allright I can top your stupid moment with an even stupidier moment. Working along, everything fine, then out of the blue no audio whatsoever. Check all the cable, they look fine, trash prefs, reboot, repair permisions, everything I can think of. Then out of complete desperation I decide to reinstall FCP. 3-4 hours later and still nothing. I’m about to cry when a friend walks in and ask me whats wrong, I explain and he says, “oh, did you check the mute button” It was the mute button.

Paul, I cant say I remember Pulp Fiction that well but I what I hold up as my gold standard of editing is the opening of Tarkovsky’s “The Sacrifice”. One single 8 1/2 minute tracking shot with 0 edits. I agree with you in that editing is not about cuting but is about making choices. Chosing to not make a cut can be a much better edit than chosing to make one.

My thoughts also. Plus DV will easier to work with on the setup I will be using.

Jeremy, From what I understand all media will be formated to DV (original was DV, DVCPRO HD, and P2) and put onto a LaCie d2 extrem 500G FW800 drive. FCP Studio 5.04/OS 10.4.4. 1 Ghz RAM. External keyboard, mouse, 23 inch cinema display.
