Thanks, Michael. The LUT would fall off during the transcode. It’s a bug of some sort, I think. The only solution was to load all the clips to transcode into the source monitor and then start the transcode. Then the embedded LUT would be baked in on the transcode.

For anyone looking for answer here. I’m in Media Composer 8.4 right now and can’t trim out a subclip in a 25fps 2K project. I have an action shot where sound man cut out early – resultant subclip makes it look as though the shot is over when there’s quite a bit left. I wish Avid would change this behaviour. This could be very problematic in reality television, I think.

I tried everything to make this work. I even upgraded to the very latest version, but nothing stopped the mysterious disappearing LUT….except this….
I selected a bunch of shots and loaded then ALL into the source viewer. Then the LUT would consistently stay during transcode! I think Avid needed to open the clip to see the embedded LUT (or something like that – who knows?t). Otherwise, it would just skip adding the LUT at random.

Ryan’s suggestion mostly works. It mostly shows just the shadow, but there are slight white outlines to the text as well as a bit of grey fill (depending on how the screen effect is interacting with the layers below). In principle, it is the correct answer, but it’s not exactly what I was looking for – which was just the shadow, all by itself. But, it’s good enough for my purposes. Thanks!

Joseph, the only problem with the method you proposed is that it shows the shadow in parts of the image I don’t want to see it (over the text on the lower layer) – but definitely good to know about that “shadow only” button, which I didn’t know about.
