I’m torn between these choices:

MXF Sony MPEG 444 (450Mbit)
MXF DNxHD 1080p 444
MXF DNxHD 1080p 220/185/197 10 bits
Avid MXF RGB 1080p (Avid 1:1 10 bits)

The only one I’m fully familiar with is DNxHD 185x(10 bit) as I work with 1080p 25fps footage. I’m familiar with Avid 1:1 10 bit, but have never seen it described as ‘RGB’.

Those are good points, Alex. I am wondering what the next generation of young motion graphics artists will be using to learn their craft in their bedrooms though. I think CC will make it very difficult for them to get off the ground with After Effects. I also wonder if CC is going to kill off the massive After Effects culture out there, with free tutorials left, right and centre. I was actually starting to wonder if this might be a good thing for Apple Motion?

Thanks so much, Michael! When I checked out CaptureGammaEquation, it was listed as “ITU-R BT.709 type”, yet the footage has that totally washed out “log look”. Is this a case where the metadata could be incorrect? I am in the process of contacting the DP.

Thanks, Michael. All of that info is very helpful. I am asking production for the details about how the footage was shot. How exactly do you personally read the metadata of the XAVC footage? The content browser doesn’t seem to be of much help. Do you look to the bin columns in Avid for all your metadata information? You say it may sometimes be unreliable, but is that the best place to see it all?

Thanks, Chris. The integration factor is hugely appealing – it’s just the licensing that’s scary. Even if I were a post house manager I would be weary of it because of a lack of control. You can own Autodesk Smoke and that does everything.
