No need to hide the fact that you are using a subcontractor, I have it in my contracts that I may hire sub-contractors when needed and when I meet with a client and we are planning a project I will often mention the team I will be working with. I always hire out for script writing and research and sometimes for gfx and shooting, I do all of the editing myself.

IMO it makes for more client confidence knowing that a team of experienced people will be workin on their project, I am running it and finding the best people for each task, definately a plus when negotiating with a client.

“We mount small POV cameras on our rental car”

Are the cameras inside the car or outside or both? Permits are usually called for if you are using the public space in some way, honestly I would just go for it.

That said I don’t know of an intermediate off hand but like you said if you want to play it safe contact the film bureau for those countries or cities you plan to shoot in.

March 23, 2011 at 6:21 pm in reply to: Day rates. How do they work?

“I would suggest that if you’re getting 1-hour gigs, that you may wish to take a long look at your business model.”

I had phone call one day where a client from Toronto needed some shots in Winnipeg a few days later at a store of a surpirse prize winner. Get the shots of the celebration, some b-roll, quick talkie with a few people and out the door, send off the tape.

One hours work for a half day rate plus charge for equipment, nothing wrong with that business model.

“that some here consider charging a day rate as dishonest or immoral is preposterous”

No need to be coy, it was me that said it 🙂

“We inform our clients up front”

That’s all you need to do.

In my business, I could not ethically charge a full day (5+) hours for something that took 1 hour to do, I just couldn’t, that’s why I have a half day and full day rate. If you don’t offer a half day and the client knows that and you can get paid for a full day then that is fine. I don’t have clients like that.

I cap it at 10 hours, anything over that is $100/hour extra, gives the client incentive to have a shorter day; I don’t work those 14 hour film crew days for a good reason.

Make a contract stating that he will get a 10% referral fee for the first project. After that, nothing; if the client comes back to you then that is because of you, not the referal.

I have a half-day and a full-day rate. If I quote a full day (5-10) but only work half (1-5) then I only bill for half, to do otherewise seems dishonest.

March 2, 2011 at 4:02 pm in reply to: Producer or just passing out numbers?

This reminds me of a story.

I had a client for whom I made 6 episodes of a sports TV show, I put all 6 onto a dual-layer DVD for them for their archive. About a month later their cheques started to bounce and we stopped working with them.

A little while after that I get several calls from the person they hired to duplicate these DVD’s for commercial sale; he didn’t have a dual-layer burner and didn’t know how to make copies. I told him he would have to rip and re-author them if he wanted to make single-layer copies. He asked if I could turn over the source files (The Encore project), I said no.

He asked (agressively) “why did you put them on a dual-layer DVD” (this was 2006) and I told him because they didn’t all fit on a single layer, like I was the idiot for making a dual-layer.

He asked how could he rip and re-author these and I finally said “X is not my client anymore and it’s not my problem, you figure it out”.

If the guy was friendly or a collegue I might have been nicer about it but I had to deal with him numerous times before I dropped the client and he was a PITA.
