Depends on the project and how long I will be using the space and whether I need exclusive use of the space.
There is a yoga studio I routinly use for talking head interviews when there are no classes going on and they ask $100 for the day. If classes need to be cancelled to accomodate us then it doubles.

Don’t start work until you hav a contract AND a deposit of 50%. Send an invoice for the total of all of the work you have agreed upon, and say AMOUNT DUE and make it half of the total. The invoice you send at the completion of the project will be for the rest, and once you get paid you turn over all of the deliverables.

August 10, 2010 at 2:06 pm in reply to: Price Estimate – Assistant Editor for a Television ShowThis is easy.
What is your current yearly income, or what do you WANT it to be? Let’s say $100K just for fun.
3 months is 1/4 of the year. 1/4 of $100K is $25k. Specificy that anything over a certain number of hours per week is time and a half, and that you are brought on for all 13 episodes.
Add 15% for using your own gear, add in 15% for living expenses since you’ll be away from home, and divide by 13 to get a “per episode” estimate if that’s what they want. This comes to $32,500, or $2500 per episode, or based on a 40 hour work week $62.50/hour.
Hmm, too low, take all of the numbers and raise it by 20%.
Producers will usually do budgets and find funding for an entire season, not just per episode, unless it’s a pilot.

What I would reccomend is find a local company that hanldes music clearances and let them do all of the work, include it in the costs for the project. If they are indi artists that own their own publishing then it might not be too tough.
I have a company I use that handles music clearances and negotiating. They are located in Winnipeg but could still help you out there.

Even for original material, if it has been released then you need clearance from the publishing company or whoever owns the copyright to that material, it’s not always the performers.
I stay away from this kind of stuff becasue of the copyright headaches, unless a client wants to pay big $ for licensing, which they usually don’t.

For something as specific as your particular case you should probably contact a copyright lawyer in your area.

I work on Avid. I archive the project, all sources files, rendered files and consolidate the finished project and keep all of the material I used and delete what I didn’t use.
Sometimes I won’t consolidate but delete all of the raw video if I have a tape source if it is a long project like an event video. If I ever need to bring it back I batch capture from the original tape.

In the case of the spot that I did that I linked to, the distributors gave the radio the station the videos to use specifically for promotions, so they were clear to use them for tv.
