  • An i5 will be okay for editing on laptops. 8 GB of RAM is fine too. Try to get one with an SSD (like an ultrabook) and it’ll make life much easier. You can connect to your footage via a USB 3.0 port.

This is assuming you are not editing R3D files or the like!

  • The litepanels are good, but they aren’t as powerful as a tungsten or HMI. Did the image look okay on the LCD? If yes, did the histogram show a decent exposure?

If yes, can you show us a sample image of what you mean by dark?

The only time I’ve seen stuttering on DSLRs is if the card has problems. Even the best cards sometimes has problems, just like any other media device. No one delivers 100% perfection in manufacturing.

Other than this, I haven’t seen the problem, ever.

There is no rule that says you have to use Prores or DNxHD or any other intermediary codec. I have yet to see any good reason for it, and in all my testing, I have yet to see an advantage. I avoid intermediary codecs like the plague.

I know this goes against the grain of ‘common knowledge’, so instead of justifying it to you, I’ll recommend that you shoot a few seconds of footage and test for yourself to see if there’s a substantial difference to warrant it.

I shoot and edit native, with just one render between source and master. If and when I need more ‘data strength’, I prefer to do it the best way – which is via TIFF image sequences. Vegas can easily edit H.264 native.

Regarding the issue with speeding up in Vegas, I don’t have a specific answer to give. Have you read the manual? Most NLEs spell out clearly how they handle frame rate conversions. Maybe somebody with specific Vegas can chime in.

If you are on a windows machine check device settings to see if it has detected your camera as hardware. I don’t know if macs have this option or not.

If you have an NLE installed, check it if is detecting your cameras.

The idea is to check if the connections are okay. The second step is to check if the firewire ports aren’t blown.

LOL, I know better than to ask a manufacturer for info. I’m actually worried they’ll oblige, and make it too easy!

Before I forget, thanks a ton for the info!

  • Paul, you did get 10-bit in Premiere in the first test, so the result shows at least that it is capable of it.

In the second test, you do realize that a 16-bit image will cause banding on a 10-bit monitor. What color space was your gradient in? What ICC profile? What profile are you using to view this in AE? Import this AE project into Premiere – what results do you see?

Unfortunately, I don’t use a BM or AJA card. Do you have a 10-bit GPU that you can compare it to?

  • There is one area the Red One (and probably the Scarlet, but haven’t used it) beats the hell out of the C300 – skin tones.

I use the C300 for great imagery with the fastest workflow for the cheapest price. It’s a business arrangement.

But there’s absolutely one thing I can state for certain: I will never use the camera for a project that is ‘close at heart’ – I don’t like the images. They’re too video-like, and the DR isn’t all that great either. In fact, I can say that its imagery is very similar to the FS100’s. You could make both of them match with very little effort.

    Mind you, I can rent a C300 with CP.2 or L lenses for about $250 a day – otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered.

Have the cameras been setup to output via HDMI?
