The subtitling company will be able to export the spotting file in any format required by your dvd program (STL, etc). Check the specs of your program and then request that the subtitling company give you the correct format, otherwise you will need to get the format changed, which sometimes could affect the spotting. This would be an issue since most likely you wont be able to check the accuracy of the Asian languages subtitles (unless of course you have the staff that could do this).

Subtitling companies are used to exporting spotting files on dozens of formats for dvd and nle systems (we do so all the time), so you should feel within your right to request a specific format.

    Cheers, S.

February 10, 2006 at 3:09 pm in reply to: Monitoring problem: using Kona and HDlink together. help!

Thanks again for helping us here. Just to clarify this is the Kona Lhe. not the Kona 2. When we send color bars to the JVC we notice a very slight shake, which is noticable mostly when compared to the HDlink footage, which is perfectly solid. This happens with both the 1080i signal and the 525 signal. But when we send real footage it is barely noticable. The strange thing is that we did not notice this until we installed the hdlink. Thus is it possible that there is something wrong with the way we are connecting the system (or settings) or we simply are noticing it more bacause the hdlink footage gives us such contrast. Let me describe in detail our connections and see if you see anything wrong:

-From the kona lh card the 60 pin connects to the back for the kbox
-from the Kona lh card the sdi/hd input, output 1 and output 2 also connect to the back of the Kbox
-From the front of the Kbox, 3bnc component cables go from component out to the component in of the JVC monitor.
    – From the front of the kbox, one bnc sdi cable exits the SDI output 1 and connects to the HDlink, which connects to the 2nd cinema display.

In theory I don’t see anything wrong with this. If there is nothing wrong with this or the settings, it is possible that there is somthing wrong with the monitor. I will try to ring JVC today, although wish me luck in trying to talk to someone there! wish all companies had teh same support as AJA, BM, and HUGE. Cheers, S.

Thanks for the message. The hdlink is connected to the sdi output of the kona breakout box and it takes the color bars from fcp perfectly. We can’t do the test because our jvc monitor does not have the hd/sdi imput board, it only has a component board. so the signal is coming out of the kona through component into the jvc. We will use the JVC only for color correction, thus we only needed the component board. I’m not sure that this is the problem since the monitor is supposed to support 1080i (50, 60, and 24psf) throuh the component card.

We took the sdi output cables that comes straight out of the Kona card and connected to the Kona breakout box as stated in the instructions. From the box, there are component cables going to the JVC monitor and one sdi to the hdlink. When controlled by the desktop, we see the same thing on the hdlink controlled monitor and in the jvc, except that the jvc shakes. If we send bars from final cut, the hdlink monitor is perfect but the jvc shakes. Is it that we are not supposed to send the sdi and component signals at the same time? we are a bit confused about this. Or do you think that most likely is the set up of the JVC monitor? Thanks! S.

October 25, 2005 at 3:05 am in reply to: Market for this post-production Suite? Please need advise.

Hello everyone. We posted this previous article on the HDV forum and received a reply that made it very clear that there may be some misconception about who we are and what our intentions are.

It seems that my article made the impression that we were a company who wanted to benefit from producing in struggling countries with low wages and then benefit by selling our work to struggling US studios and networks, and that the intention of our post production suite was to continue this practice by producing in poor countries but leveraging our post equipment by renting it in a higher quality of living country

They just changed it so I guess my comment had some merit if they had such a rapid response. I also understand that AJA is a great company with great people, so maybe after bring this to their attention they moved fast to change it.

    Good for you AJA!
