Thanks Steve –
So . . . it took a bit of playing around (albeit, mostly random) . . . but I think I’m back to being okay. After I repaired my disk persmissions, I restarted my computer a few times while playing around with using different firewire cords . . .
Not sure if it will happened again in the future . . . crossing my fingers.
Its a scary error, though . . . demons and evil.
Sorry about your project, that’s heart wrenching

November 28, 2007 at 6:12 pm in reply to: File I/O Error in FCP – Drives failing – Media LostYikes. I am getting a file I/O error when I try to render. From reading your post, I’m am really really worried. If I lost all my captured footage it would set me back many many days of work.
I’m on MAC OS X, dual 2 GHz G5, 4 GB ram . . . using FCP6, and maxtor hard drives.
Can anyone help us?

Did you ever figure out what to do? I’m having the same problem working off of a maxtor 750 gig and a maxtor 250 gig . . .

Thanks for the imput everyone!
Yeah, I tested it too and found no difference either. But I think I’ll have to get him in here to witness the test to make it official.
Good points about the workflow and avoiding corruption . . .
I suppose I like having one big AE file because I tend to reuse and borrow from other compositions and its nice to have them all there and not have to constantly import projects . . . its like they end up being combined anyway with all the imports I do.
Anyway, I think I at least sort of win the debate on technical grounds, even if breaking up the project into smaller projects is the right thing to do for workflow.

September 10, 2007 at 1:00 am in reply to: after effects error: adding to movie (-1309)hmm . . . okay. well I think it will be easier for me to do my final export to a different hard drive than to try reformatting at this point. (Its a terabyte and has a ton of info on it)
I’m sure there are applications I could get that would let me run windows on my mac, but I think it might be too complicated for me to try right now. I’m going to stick to your brilliant segmenting technique and then when it comes to FCP, I’ll just daisy-chain hard drives and export to a non-FAT . . .
I knew this hard drive was too good of a deal to be true. $320 for a terabyte . . . live and learn.
Have a great night! I’ll post a link to the project when its done in a month or so!

September 10, 2007 at 12:35 am in reply to: after effects error: adding to movie (-1309)hmmm . . . well, I work on a mac, so that’s not an option. I don’t mind segmenting where needed for my After Effects renders, but I wonder if Final Cut Pro will have the same problem when I try to execute my final uncompressed export . . . When that time comes I guess I could always export to another hard drive . . .
Live and learn : )

September 9, 2007 at 10:07 pm in reply to: after effects error: adding to movie (-1309)yes, it was. format: MS-DOS File System (FAT32)
I assume there’s no way to reformat it without losing all the info?
