October 26, 2012 at 1:34 pm in reply to: Which Mac desktop to get for FCP Studio or FCP XGuys,
I really appreciate all this amazing info!
So, i think iMac it is, (the new one coming out) and maybe with some sort of raid thunderbolt drive.
In all honesty, last time I edited was a year ago or so when I was still using FCP 7 on various Mac towers (not my own) and my trusted 17 inch Mac Book Pro (my own) and external drives. I completely skipped the FC Studio debacle, btw.. I was in a cave. 😉
So, this new Mac that my university grad department wants to get may be multipurpose — it may ALSO be used for game design and development.
In other words, if I get the new iMac coming out with some sort of external drive set up (thunderbolt raid drive) can I load FCP X, some Adobe stuff (like AE, Photoshop, etc), AND Unity Pro (game development software) all on the same machine? Will the new iMAcs work with 3D software?
Also, if I get a thunderbolt external drive, WHICH BRAND is best (G-Raid with thunderbolt??) I have had bad experience with Lacie in the past…
Other things to do with this new iMAc will be hooking it up via HDMI cable to a PS3 and record game action on the computer via capture screen software (which I don’t think will be hard).
Anyway, I’m listing all the things I may be doing with this computer! Jeez…
Many thanks!!!

March 3, 2012 at 9:01 pm in reply to: Mobile Platform Compression and Shooting: suggestions for resolution rates, codecs and compression formatsHi guys,
Thanks for this info, I really appreciate it!!!!!!!!!!
I have no experience shooting with the T2i. My experience rests with the XDCAM and importing it into FCP, for DVD output or similar. I also have experience using the ProRes 422 codec before (shooting machinima with IShow U HD Pro). I don’t have experience shooting for mobile output though.
By the way, any ideas for frame rates? Should I stick to 60fps or something else with the T2i for mobile content?
Cheers,

March 1, 2012 at 7:45 pm in reply to: Mobile Platform Compression and Shooting: suggestions for resolution rates, codecs and compression formatsSo, the subject matter is short 30 sec interview video clips (with audio).
I need to create 5-10 clips, 30 seconds each, that can be uploaded onto this mobile app my team is creating.
I am shooting with the EOS Rebel Canon T2i camera. HD quality. But in all honesty, have never used this camera, so don’t know its specs yet.
I was thinking of shooting (maybe 720p) and then compressing that to whatever format I need to compress. The final output may be in KB?? I have no idea what to compress to. I have no idea what format to compress to.
These videos (and this app) will be cross-mobile (iPhone, Blackberry, Android).
Thank you so much!!!!!

August 9, 2009 at 3:17 pm in reply to: match frame problems now with changed directoryHi David, yes, the only reason why I don’t want to employ Media Manager right now is because I have already copied all my files (1.86 TB of it!) onto RAID external drives (3TB each), one working and the other, a backup drive.
So, I am presuming it would mean erasing my files and taking another 1 or 2 days to recopy stuff via Media Manager. I will be back in the edit room tomorrow, and will try using a different Mac computer to see how my media files are reconnecting from my external drive. Essentially, right now, the problem is:
1) I can’t use match frame because FCP goes to the server, not my drive
2) 14 of my media files are offline (all of them are freeze frames)
3) when I try to reconnect my offline media files, again, FCP reconnects them to the network server where my duplicates are, not from my external driveAnyway…sorry for my long email. I really need the tech support after working on this project for months on end. (It’s a one-hour indie doc.)
CHEERS and many thanks again!!!
