Thank you very much for your response. So, it sounds like the speed in one drive is not that big a deal. Barefeats likes to talk about the ultimate boot drive, but this isn’t for that purpose so I’m thinking differences here w/ one drive over another aren’t significant.
I understand what you mean about RAIDs. Would love to get a RAID 5 and priced an internal one out from Maxupgrades.com. It just seemed a bit silly to spend around $600 for an internal RAID (vs $200 for just a 1TB drive) when I’ll probably upgrade my G5 in a year or so.
What I was wondering about was whether Samsung had a good reputation, especially for reliability. Used to buy Maxtor drives b/c I read they were the fastest then had a couple die on me. As I won’t have a RAID to protect me and the speed won’t make much difference, this is my primary concern.

Yeah, loved the idea of getting organized with media management but think my gentle suggestion that we incorporate some of the rules (or some kind of general standards!!!) may have rubbed someone the wrong way and lead to my not being put back on the schedule. Perhaps this was a bad move for free lancer. Oh well.

Thanks very much, Shane! One question though, don’t you mean that render times will decrease with the raid? Would think that b/c the drives are faster that rendering would if anything be faster as well.
btw, am a big fan of “Getting Organized…” Just wish I could have gotten the rest of the office to go along with it as well.

I’m sorry, that was stupid of me. I’m using Red 3. I’m a bit confused though, I thought you had to get some kind of material or skin to wrap over the sphere and there were some sites that had these skins free to download. Am I on the wrong track?

Okay, people who complain often get damned, so I’ll just say I’m pretty happy but wouldn’t mind a few changes. Not sure if this was what you guys were talking about before with the timeline, but I get a little hot under the collar when I try to zoom out and FCP does not center around the cursor in the timeline. I know I can press the space bar a couple of times to get back to near where I was, but still do I lose my place. It would be nice to have an option to change this.
But one thing that I find absolutely crazy and unacceptable is that every time I import audio clips they’re all panned to the left by FCP for some reason. Is this a bug? Is there some reason for this? It’s been happenning for me since 4.5. Either something’s crazy or it’s me (generally it’s me).

…they talk about using an EnhanceBox E8-ML with a RocketRAID 2322 card into a G5 and running a Raid 5. They talk about how the RocketRAID 2322 supports Raid 5, but I thought as this isn’t built into the EnhanceBox E8 itself that this qualified as a software raid.

DVCProHD is pretty easy to deal with in my opinion. We edited, did effects, color correction, etc, on a DVCProHD short this past summer and most of it required no rendering using only a single drive (i.e. not raided) firewire 800 drive. It was SO much easier than working with uncompressed 10 bit SD that I can’t even begin to describe, and it looked infinitely better as well. So I wouldn’t think you’d need a very fancy RAID to get nice performance from DVCProHD material.
Back to the original post, I hadn’t heard anything derogatory said about Caldigit lately. Actually, the review here by Bob Zelin was incredibly favorable:

From this review I think if I had to buy a RAID today I’d get definitely get a Cal Digit FASTA-4e card and either one of their ready to go RAIDs (and get the full tech support set up), or possibly go the mixed tech support route and get a Fusion 500P or an EnhanceBox E8 that you can read the review of here:

I’m afraid that might water down both of them. I think I understand the logic. It would be nice to do all work in something like After Effects. But it sounds like these programs go a little beyond even what that great program can do. I think we’re back to the argument of different tools for different jobs.
