Oh wow, thank you for that! Unfortunately, I have to travel more lightly than you as the laptop has to go from home to work and back every day (not to mention to another city for weekends). My plan is get one of the new USB 3 enclosures and put in a 1TB SSD when Crucial finally releases theirs. I’ve already got monitors for home, work, and the weekend place.
Was just concerned that I heard about some glitches and burn in issues with the Retina, so was afraid to pull the trigger. But, you haven’t run into any of this, right?

Thank you very much. That is a very nice monitor. Unfortunately, it’s a bit above my price range as I actually edit in 3 places, so a lot of purchases have to be either portable, or in 3s. I ended up getting a ViewSonic VX2770SMH. The reviews were positive and people said they were able to calibrate the color pretty well. Am sure it’s not perfect or anywhere near the model you got, but hopefully it will do until I have the funds to get a T-Tap and HD TV.

Well, I’m certainly not going to argue with someone of your experience, but you’ve honestly confused me a bit. I’ve been reading old posts here and I thought you were a big proponent of never trust anything for color unless you have at least something like a T-Tap to a TV (not computer monitor). So I figured the 27″ I’m looking for wouldn’t be too crucial and would be mostly for more editing real estate.
Did I misunderstand? Sorry for my confusion.

Thank you for that. And it’s a big relief to know that kind of thing wouldn’t be an issue. I currently use a 17″ MBP with a 1920×1080 screen and would I use a very old (and square shaped) 17″ LCD there are huge issues. It doesn’t show the whole part of the desktop it’s supposed to, etc.

Sounds like you’ve made up your mind then. I know, these things are maddening and such a waste of time when all you want to do is edit peaceably.
I think I may have tried the other method and tried to offline and online w/o the use of media manager. I honestly do not remember or what the results were, but I would not recommend.

Is it a big deal to try to get closer to the resolution of Retina MBP? Will I have a hard time moving items from one screen to another?

If I understand the original question correctly, then yes I completely agree with Alex that this should work fine. I do this this all the time and so long as you use the Media Manager to make the lower res files, then direct FCP to use the lower res files, it’s not an issue. If you’ve never done this re-pointing of files, it’s not hard and easy to walk you through.

Thanks for the help. Yes, luckily I did make the deadline. What worked for me was to make a disk image ISO in Encore, then burned it to the disk using Disk Utility. Strange, can I really be the only one having this problem? Interesting how it wouldn’t burn correctly with FCP or Encore, but did when using Encore this way.
About proofing the disk, I did it in Encore by Build – Check Project. Everything was fine there and when I finally burned it in the method I described above, it played fine on my Blur-ray (which is 2-3 years old).

I ended up just calling AJA and BMD today and learned their HDMI products are really designed for TVs, not computer monitors. Most of the TVs have audio out, so I should be good from there.
