Am looking to configure a system around either an AJA T-Tap or the Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Monitor. Portability is very important so I’d like to go with one of these. The problem is how to monitor the audio when previewing through HDMI. Have read reports of audio coming out of sync when using audio straight from the computer. Best solutions I could find are consumer TVs with audio out (not good for video preview) and the possibility of an HDMI audio/video splitter or separator (though haven’t been able to find the right one).
This must come up a good bit, but my research hasn’t yielded anything.

So, any suggestions on getting audio preview from decent external monitors when using a T-Tap or UltraStudio Mini Monitor?

I would suggest picking up something like an M-Audio Fast Track. While designed for recording, I’ve found it to be a very low noise and low latency audio solution for monitoring stereo mixes. Plug some studio headphones into it and you’re looking good. Works off of USB power.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you could find something cheaper that is just output.

The issue with audio latency is that you probably aren’t working with the best on-board sound hardware when using a laptop. You might be looking at a latency of 30-50ms which will make things feel a little “not right” in terms of sync. Something more professional like the M-Audio brings latency down to 2-6ms.

Thank you for that. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if devices like that will work b/c, in my experience with FCP, the lag varies. But, if someone has experience with this in PP, please speak up!

Also, I’m hesitant to drag around another box as I’ll be doing it everyday and between 2 cities.

I ended up just calling AJA and BMD today and learned their HDMI products are really designed for TVs, not computer monitors. Most of the TVs have audio out, so I should be good from there.

    Hi Samuel,

I’ve ran test with both the T-Tap and UltraStudio 3D. You will get best results when the video and audio are routed to the same device.

From Premiere’s preferences> Playback > Choose the same I/O card in Audio Device and Video Device.

    All the best,
