advice for 27″ external monitor?
Posted by Samuel Frazier on March 20, 2013 at 4:02 amI’m going to buy a MBP Retina or non- Retina and am looking for something to extend my desktop. I know this is not an ideal setup for color correction and I may add a T-Tap and a 1080p TV later. But for now I just need more real estate for my timeline and want a monitor that is at least decent with color.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

March 20, 2013 at 1:38 pmI just replacedy 30″ Dell with a 27″ Viewsonic (it’s dual link so it is greater than 1080p resolution which will better match your Retina’s resolution).

You can find it for cheaper elsewhere.
HP also makes a really sweet 27″ dual link led monitor as well:
This monitor can also be found for cheaper than the list price.

March 20, 2013 at 7:26 pmThank you all for the help. I appreciate it.
Jeremy, unfortunately, something odd happened to your link and it’s not coming through for me. Were you referring to these two IPS monitors:Found some other options at HP, but they were well above my budget of around $350. Also found this Viewsonic right at my budget that won a PC Magazine award:

Is it a big deal to try to get closer to the resolution of Retina MBP? Will I have a hard time moving items from one screen to another?
Thanks again!

March 20, 2013 at 7:31 pmThat link certainly got butchered in my last post. It’s now fixed. Sorry about that:

It won’t be hard, no. You can go with 1080p, but since I was coming from a 2560 monitor, I wanted to keep that resolution rather than downgrade. Remember the Retina resolution is 2880 by 1800.
1080p will add some extra screen real estate, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

March 20, 2013 at 7:32 pm$350? That’s a MIGHTY LOW budget for a monitor that you want to closely match the quality and color of your high-end Retina display.

March 20, 2013 at 7:43 pmThank you for that. And it’s a big relief to know that kind of thing wouldn’t be an issue. I currently use a 17″ MBP with a 1920×1080 screen and would I use a very old (and square shaped) 17″ LCD there are huge issues. It doesn’t show the whole part of the desktop it’s supposed to, etc.

March 20, 2013 at 7:45 pmTo be clear, the Dual link 27″ monitor will look better than the 1080 monitor.
But since you don’t have the budget for it, spend as much as you can on the 1080 monitor.

March 20, 2013 at 7:58 pmWell, I’m certainly not going to argue with someone of your experience, but you’ve honestly confused me a bit. I’ve been reading old posts here and I thought you were a big proponent of never trust anything for color unless you have at least something like a T-Tap to a TV (not computer monitor). So I figured the 27″ I’m looking for wouldn’t be too crucial and would be mostly for more editing real estate.
Did I misunderstand? Sorry for my confusion.

March 21, 2013 at 10:19 amI replaced a faulty CinemaHD screen six months ago with a Dell U2711 – its been an excellent monitor and would certainly recommend one for extending your desktop realestate.
