I know about that lens. Wide-angle is a concern and 16 isn’t wide enough for my liking right now. I prefer a pull zoom option that does not lock me into a given lens.

Yea, that was my initial thought, too, just use one channel. The reason I discounted that idea was that I am afraid I will get sort of strange audio, only getting half the mic. Here is the mic in questions:

    ECZ-990 Shotgun Microphone

I am under the impression that if I where to only use the left side, anything on the right would be abnormally quite, sounding abnormal. Thus the desire to simply combine both sides into a mono signal.

    Ty,

Apology accepted. As far as a solution, I opted to do some searching on passive mixer schematics and I found this link:

    https://www.all-electric.com/schematic/simp_mix.htm

It looks like making a real basic one just calls for some 10K resisters, so I am going to give that a try.

Forgive me, I didn’t realize in this forum when someone has a different option then one of the moderators is an argument. I apology for arguing with you. Thank you for the link and taking the time to reply to me, despite my poor behavior.

P.S. I see that what is on the web site is not what was emailed me. Here is what I am replying to:

    Sam,

Mics don’t generate enough voltage to burn anything out. A different problem can occur if the stereo mic needs phantom power on each capsule, but since you’re mics have unbalanced 1/8″ TRS plugs, they don’t use Phantom Power anyway.

Of course it’s mono to both channels. That what a combiner does. What did you expect, stereo?

I gave you a solution. If you don’t want to do that, fine, but don’t argue with me about it.

    Ty,

It is my understanding that one of these stereo female to mono male plugs are designed for when the thing being plugged into it is passive. Example: A pair of stereo headphones being plugged into a mono source.

The problem I seeing with using it with an active stereo mic is there will be a charge coming in from both the left and the right sides from the mic, in the adapter, they will mix and ultimately burn out one side or both sides of the mic.

It actually eludes to the fact that this should only be used go to from mono to stereo, not the other way around in in the second half of the description:

Description: This is a Stereo Mini Jack going to a Mono Mini Plug. Will deliver the mono signal to both sides of the Mini-Jack.

  • I knew about the 4:4:4 cameras, never realized there are also 4:4:4 tape decks and displays, but it make sense.

I assume a 46″ to 50″ 4:4:4 flat screen is NOT cheap. Now that I think about it, in the four months I have been attending this church, the flat screens always display a static image. Maybe there is an alternative to using flat screens that will be more still camera friendly. I will have to explore that one else where…

The last picture I displayed was from an over head projector. I assume there are 4:4:4 projector, so I have some Q’s about that:

1: Is it possible to convert a lower quality signal, I think the cameras are all 4:1:1, up to 4:4:4 just for the projector?
2: Is it possible to adjust and/or pick the white balance of projectors? Ideally I would like to set it to 3200K to balance with the stage lights.

  • Your explication makes perfect sense. I know my still camera and single CCD video cameras use the Bayer pattern, but it had not dawned on me that LED/LCD screens do the same, but it makes perfect sense now that you say it. And the fact that the R,G, and B are going to be out of phase, also make perfect sense.

Is there some type of display, like Plasma, that won’t have this problem? I am thinking if there is some type of display that does two key things:

1: All three colors are in phase.
2: The physical stuff that is luminance is able to maintain it’s is state while the current is out of phase, allowing for high shutter speed on my still camera. (I want to be using 1/320 to 1/500 to freeze things with my long lens)

I am shooting RAW with the camera set to 3200K and processing the images at 3200K. In such a controlled situations where the lights are a consent, it makes no sense to shoot on Auto WB.

    Bob,

In your original reply you said: “But you want to go to a mail order company so you can save every penny”.

Like I said before, the idea of finding a local dealer did not dawn on me. I used Blackmagic Design’s web site to locate a dealer in my area, ADK Video Editing. What a great group of folks!

Myself being a software programmer and annual about things, the owner (Scott) has been very help and is quite willing to work with all my quirks! The end result is that he has priced out a very nice Core i7 system at a reasonable price.

To top it off, I spend some time on the phone with another gentleman that explained the whole IO card issue to me and continued my education on the whole world of HD video editing.

Could I have saved a few hundred building it myself, especially now that I am clued in? Yes, but have friends and support like ADK Video Editing is well worth the extra $$$, even for a know-it-all like me 🙂

Bob, thank you for your above statement, you are the man!

    Sam

P.S. I think ADK Video Editing does mail order too, if you are looking for a system, you might want to look them up.
