    Bob,

Yes, we do have 10GbE. Our EVO shared storage sever offers GbE/iSCSI, 10GbE or fibrechannel. You can have all 3 going in the same box at the same time if you wish. You can have up to 10 direct connect GbE or FC clients without the need for any external switch. It offers file sharing and volume sharing. No Metadata controller ever required! The 8TB Base unit can do multi-stream ProRes422HQ or uncompressed HD over GbE or 2k over FC. DPX 4k?, add more drives please 🙂 Best of all, SANmp is bundled in for free. You can also scale by adding the EVO expansion chassis, tossing in a switch and stacking your favorite 3rd party FC storage in the mix. EVO can also repurpose existing storage by using the built-in IP to FC bridge.

Aside from the knowledge on how to properly configure it all, yeah, that’s pretty much it.

    Hi Rick,

    Are all volumes affected?

How much available space is on the volume(s) in question?

Are you experiencing problems with all user accounts? If you create a new user do you still experience problems? Try logging in from different workstation.

    Check the RAID integrity.

Let us know if you resolve the problem. Thanks!

    Hello,

Yes, there are truly working solutions for this type of environment. We’ve been doing successful mixed OS, Avid/FCP/Pro Tools solutions for years. A thorough workflow discussion is absolutely vital to the success. All 3 of the afore mentioned apps have unique requirements. It can and has been done many times over though. Give us a ring if you feel like chatting on the subject in greater detail. Thanks!

“HP, IBM, Hitachi, EMC, all make great shared storages, but absolutely none of them work with a Mac. And definitely can’t handle video.”

I think this depends on who’s doing the solution. Studio Network Solutions (SNS) have been implementing audio and video (FCP/Avid & Pro Tools) SAN solutions using EMC, IBM & LSI storage for years. Just finished up a 30 seat ProRes/HD uncompressed XSAN install running on EMC CX4 arrays the other day.

Please tell me your boss has a back-up/archive solution. RAID is not a backup! If you don’t already have one, I would invest in an archive solution before buying anything else.

Infortrend (OEM Rourke) makes a good product. Don’t know much about the other vendors.

January 16, 2009 at 9:46 pm in reply to: two simple SAN questions

    Hi Bruce,

It’s hard to recommend any tools or procedures because I’m not familiar with what your SAN software will support. It sounds to me like you just need a good scrubbing. I would try erasing all of the volumes and not just the volume in question (be careful).

We recommend that users reinitialize their SAN volumes on a six to twelve month cycle. This helps maintain a reliable file system on the disk and keeps the SAN running at peak performance. Also, it is our experience that HFS+ drives exhibit irregular behavior when operated too close to maximum capacity. We recommend that users always maintain free space on each drive equal to at least 15% of that drive’s total formatted capacity (i.e. a 100GB volume should always have at least 15GB free).

Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

    Regards,
    ryan

    Hello Bruce,

How long has the SAN been in use & has there been any volume maintenance (housekeeping) performed during this time? All SANs require some amount of housekeeping, this could be a potential cause for the flakiness you describe.

    regards,
    ryan
