  • SAN newbie – would this work?

    hi

i´m new to SAN so my apologies in maybe asking a few dumb questions.

we are using two macpros running fcp and our job needs to handle 1080 HD in apple prores codec.

yesterday we got our fibrechannel raid from infortrend (eonstor A16F-G2430) with 2x 16TB capacity.
for now each mac is connected to one “side” of the RAIDs drives thru fibrechannel controller from ATTO having access to around 14TB each cause the partition is configured as Raid Level 05 with parity disk.

    My question is:
Why can´t the RAID be one big disk and both macs connect to the then shared storage?

My vendor told me that if i´d want to access the other partition the signal path would only work through ethernet.
I don´t really understand the system behind his.

Is there a way to set this up as a SAN shared storage or am i limited by the manufactures specifications here?

    Any help highly appreciated.

i googled around a bit and came to the conclusion that i´d maybe just need a FC Switch and some
    SAN software like Tiger metaSAN.

    is that just it?

Aside from the knowledge on how to properly configure it all, yeah, that’s pretty much it.

You would really want to have a professional come in and set this up for you, and to look at how your raid is configured. A professional SAN integrator would be able to tell you if everything was optimized or not, and get things moving correctly. And yes, a FC switch is definitely recommended.
