  • We’ve been implementing NAS-only solutions for media production for over 6 years now. It was SAN-only in the early years of our existence. We do both now. 4k/6k workflows on NAS was unheard-of years ago, it’s a breeze for our team these days. SANmp is used when the workflow benefits – it’s a great tool.

You can carve up EVO anyway you like:

    NAS only
    NAS and SAN
    SAN only
SAN with 3rd party file system
NAS with 3rd party file system
NAS and SAN with 3rd party file system

Cost, users, current infrastructure, performance, existing hardware, support, scaleability, and backup/archive are some of the determining factors one would consider when finalizing a solution.

EVO does transcoding for proxy generation out of the box at no extra cost. We leave it to the experts and team up with Telestream and/or other 3rd party apps/partners for proper editorial/delivery transcoding.

Here are 3 case studies on our website that include transcoding as part of the workflow

  • Thanks Nate, some of your information about EVO is inaccurate though. EVO is indeed 100% multi-user write file sharing. Multiple users can write at the same time to the same volume. EVO is SAN and NAS. Yes, SANmp is included if you want to use it, but, it is not necessary, not even for the most convoluted 4k/6k workflows. You may also use other 3rd party file systems (again not necessary). EVO also does transcoding.

Hello, I’d like to clear up a few mis-conceptions about our software and hardware solutions please.

SANmp is $499 per seat and it works with iSCSI or FC. There’s also iSANmp for $199 per seat (iSCSI only). This software works with most 3rd party storage solutions.

EVO is our shared storage server solution. EVO comes with unlimited free licenses of SANmp. There are no per-seat license fees if you are an EVO customer. EVO also does SMB and AFP file sharing utilizing our “Share Browser” feature for managing cross platform permissions. Mix any combination of 1/10Gb & 4/8Gb fiberchannel to meet all your connectivity needs. Supports Mac, Windows and Linux. EVO also works with XSAN, Storenext, MetaSAN.

We have many referenceable Avid installs throughout the world. Give us a shout if you would like to learn more: Ph# 877-537-2094 or visit: https://www.studionetworksolutions.com/video-san.php

  • I’d look for fsck.

    1. Launch Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor).
    2. In the Monitor menu choose Show Activity Monitor. This window may already be open after you launch the application.
    3. In the pop up menu at the top right of the Activity Monitor, choose “All Processes.”
    4. Under the column Process Name look for “fsck.”
    5. If you find that fsck is running it is appropriate to allow it to finish running. This may take a few minutes or a couple hours depending on the size of the
    volume.

January 13, 2011 at 7:37 pm in reply to: SAN Advice/Recommedations

    Hi Guys,

    Regarding,

“Remember, not even Studio Network Solutions systems work without SanMP (but maybe that makes it a “complete solution”, because the same company makes it).”

EVO shared storage solution from Studio Network Solutions (SNS) works with XSAN, SANmp, Storenext, MetaSAN, or Fibrejet.

EVO is modular in regards to connectivity options. One can start off as an Ethernet NAS-only solution and can scale to be a full blown SAN having any mix of fibrechannel, 10GbE and GigE/iSCSI connectivity options. You can also scale the storage by adding the optional expansion chassis. EVO does multi-stream ProRes, HD & 2k.

    Hi Larry,

I have a solution for you and it will allow all 7 Premiere Pro workstations to connect with or without a switch. All workstations edit directly from the drives (no more push pull!) You can even throw fibrechannel or 10GbE in the box later on if your needs change. Works with Mac and PC.

I also have a software only solution if you want to roll-your-own.

Give me a shout and we can talk workflow, performance & pricing. I Look forward to hearing from you.

October 13, 2010 at 8:02 pm in reply to: Drop-frame issues persist… What did I miss??

    Hi Aaron,

Check your FCP settings. Apple has a list of settings you can adjust when experiencing dropped frames. It’s on their website.

SANmp (From the same people who make that free globalSAN iSCSI initiator your using) (or MetaSAN) will allow you to share the same volume(s) amongst your 3 rooms. That’s the easy part! Keep us posted…
