Hi Dell,

In my experience you will need to render quite a bit when working with two seperate HD codecs in the same timeline. that being said, I believe the best codec for quality preservation would be Apple ProRes 422 (HQ). you could also go with a DVCPROHD 720p timeline and down convert/reneder the HDV1080i60 footage to DVCPROHD 720P. I think either option will work for you.

Hi Chris,

I work with LT/RT Mixes almost daily in FCP. Hopefully I can Help you out.
the file will appear as stereo. as you mentioned the the file should be hard panned already.

1 make sure that your track is set to stereo pair.
modify menu>stereo pair

2 audio outputs should be set to stereo pair.
this is important. if set to mono outputs the lt/rt mix will decode properly off the FCP timeline,

however upon playback the file created will collapse to centre channel.

in regards matrix decoding, the original format of Dolby pro Logic only decoded a mono track for both surrounds, in the greatly improved Pro Logic II format of matrix encoding/decoding each surround speaker has seperate information. the end viewers home theatre system equiped with PLII will derive an LFE track for your sub . giving a 5.1 listening exoerience.
Granted this is not as discrete an experience as Dolby Digital 5.1 (ac3 file)
Dolby Pro Logic II is considered an acceptable delivery format of 5.1 surrpund sound by industry professionals and broadcast houses alike.

In regards to automating the master fader… is this possible

I am mixing for 5.1 and have a project containing 14 tracks at about 2 hours in length
certain sections are much quieter then others (interviews compared to live music)
i have increased the volume of the individual interview tracks (very time consuming)

my master output is set at 0dB. i want to increase the output volume on only the interview sections

considering i am at the top for gain on individual tracks my only option is to automate/record the levels of the fader as I am riding it in real time.
this seems like a pretty basic and straight forward audio task?
can FCP do this?
if not any suggestions will be appreciated
