Best FCP sequence settings for using both HDV1080i60 and DVCPROHD 720P?
Hello all,
my small documentary company is working with a project shot in two video formats: HDV 1080i60 and DVDPRO HD 720P. We’ll be using both formats in individual timelines & sequences. What would you in the creative cow community recommend our sequence settings be set to for the best look, output etc. being that we’ll have these two formats back to back at times in the same timeline/sequence?Thanks much for all your help & time!!

Hi Dell,
In my experience you will need to render quite a bit when working with two seperate HD codecs in the same timeline. that being said, I believe the best codec for quality preservation would be Apple ProRes 422 (HQ). you could also go with a DVCPROHD 720p timeline and down convert/reneder the HDV1080i60 footage to DVCPROHD 720P. I think either option will work for you.

1080i to 720p is a cross-convert not really a down-convert. If you go with ProRes (there is no real advantage of going up to (HQ) you will have to render all the footage.
What is the frame rate of the 720p? What are you delivering to? How much footage are you working with? What is the balance of footage 50/50 or 25/75 of each type? Do you have the ability to convert on capture,
Without knowing the above you are only going to get guesses as to what is best.

Why are you doing this to yourself? If you are shooting 1080i with the HDV camera, why are you NOT shooting 1080i with the P2 camera? What camera are you using to shoot both formats, BTW? That is very useful information.
Mixing the formats is not wise. I’d recommend converting the HDV to DVCPRO HD…but then you have 1080i vs 720p, two different frame sizes, so that throws a wrench into the works.
Ahh, But I see that I left this post behind and others have commented good comments as well. Still…this isn’t going to be fun.

Shoot in one format? Honestly, I’m sure you have some reason to use two formats, but using only one would eliminate these kind of problems altogether.
