What is “180” exposure? Is that the shutter angle? I have an XL1 and upon checking the manual, I think I can only adjust the shutter speed (minimum of 1/60; I can go lower than that but it’s a “digital effect” and will disable the progressive mode) and the iris (max of opening of 1.6). I always shoot at f 1.6 and shutter of 1/60 to get the shallowest depth of field the XL1 can allow. What will I do to achieve the motion blur that you mentioned in “rule #5” without any control of the shutter angle? Thanks.

Thanks. I actually downloaded a copy of the manual (even before buying the camera) but can’t find answers to my questions. For example, the Canon mic is described as “stereo electret condenser microphone.” Was looking for the word “directional” but there was none. Since it was “stereo” (and since I’m an amateur), I pressumed it was an omni-directional mic since stereo mics tend to pick up sounds in all direction (at least that’s how I know it).

Now, I’ve seen a VHF Azden WLX-PRO in the web and would like to use it. But the plug is a 1/8″ mini plug unlike that of the Canon mic (which also looks like a 1/8″ mini plug with an even smaller brother at its side). So i’m not sure if the Azden plug would fit right into the jack designed for the Canon mic. If it fits, will it work? The connectors at the back are RCA so it wouldn’t fit also. I can’t find a WLX-PRO here so I will buy online. The problem is if it will not work, then I’ll be owning something that I will never use.

Thanks Todd, I’ve been taking notes of your answers (and your answers to other members’ questions) and they have been very helpful.

What about shooting it in 30p?

Thanks Frank. Someone is selling me a used Samson UHF 32 (transmitter and receiver). I hear some sort of crackles. I think it’s due to the lapel mic’s wire (though I’m really not sure. It’s just a guess). According to the seller, it’s about 3 years old. Is it worth buying (I’m thinking of replacing everything that has wire, like the mic) or should I instead buy a brand new semi pro VHF like the Azden WLX pro? I need this wireless mic for my Canon XL1. Thanks.

What is the difference between UHF and VHF? I noticed that the UHFs are more expensive. Thanks.

You’ve mentioned “adapter.” What is it? Is it a depth-of-field adapter? Also, did you use the gamma settings (or any other color enhancement settings in the camera) to create the Indelible or you just color corrected everything in the post? Thanks.

Since the frame mode is actually an interpolated interlaced mode, don’t you think the video loses resolution because of the interpolation? thanks.

They didn’t tell exactly but it’s a JVC two-in-one: SVHS and miniDV capable. Thanks.

You mean the deck has a more durable mechanism and can handle a lot of stops and starts? The seller also told me that he just had the deck “realigned” so it’s good as new. What does that mean? I know that it’s a well used equipment because it has been used by a network.
