I’m not in the loop with the Panasonic Gh1, but take a look at Philip Bloom’s first experience with it. Nice article.

The possibilities of your client knowing shat when it comes to shooting/editing video is 99.99%. That’s the frustrating part. The other frustrating part is that if he/she is paying well, it’s hard to tell them no on the camera.
My only worries for you is the 10 minute-ish continuous record time the 7D has. In an interview, it would be wise to keep time somewhere, and stop record in an appropriate pause.
I wouldn’t be worried about low light situations. The 7D has that beat any day…unless you’re literally in a no light situation. It does inherently have a high dynamic range due to the large sensor, but still, crazy uneven lighting would be anyone’s nightmare.
Your audio…eh…
These Video DSLRs are not known for their audio abilities. There are devices out there that do work with the cameras, but even if you do get around the audio level issue, you still have to deal with the less-then-desirable audio compression.
Good Luck,

Stuart, this was taken straight from that website I linked.
“Submit a short four minutes or less movie shot ONLY on the Canon HD DSLR EOS 1D Mk IV, EOS 5D Mk II, EOS 7D or EOS Rebel T1i.
“Hope that clears it up.
Thanks,

See, this is why I love the Cow so much.
*Edit – My bad for not originally mentioning that I could be on either a Mac Book Pro or a Mac Pro…my bad*
Looking at the two companies (Matrox and AJA) I’d say my only way of deciding is from user experience. They both have products that will work with towers and laptops (unsure if my editing computer will be an Mac Pro, or Mac Book Pro (for mobile reasons)). My biggest beef with specifically the AJA LHi is inherently it doesn’t have that ability to be mobile or easily switchable between two systems. In fact, I look at all of the products for Matrox, and all of them (aside the rack mount-able one) are mobil-ish.
But this is neither here or there. I just have to decided on the solution that’s right for me. An interesting dilemma.
Thanks David!

David & Tom, thanks for the words of encouragement. I do tend to believe that once you know the basics of NLE editing, you can go and learn another without too many hiccups. My old video professor said the same thing and it was true when I went from Premiere to Avid. So really, I don’t think I’m stressing so much if I can learn FCP…but more so about switching to a completely unfamiliar OS and hunk of hardware. I like to think I’m ahead of the game when it comes to being computer literate, so I’m hopeful. It’s also about how much time I can afford to sit down and learn the program as good as I can before I can take on serious projects. Kinda like…how much runway a plane will need to take off before it ends and everything crashes. On a side note, one small reason why going Mac/FCP would be a good thing is the new line of JVC cameras records in file format that can be edited naively in FCP, and that’s a BIG deal.
David, I chose the MXO2 over the Kona LHi because of the really good review Jerry Hofmann had written not too long ago. Honestly, any real good hands on experience would make my decision, but I just don’t have a chance to do that. I have to make my decision on the plethora of reviews on the web. Unless…someone has a convincing argument that the Kona is best, I’m kinda sold on the MXO2 for now.
BTW, I love Creative Cow.

“… That’s just cool. Give me that over an ‘iPhone video stabilizer grip’ any day…
“That way, you could itemize the iPod Touch in your budget and write it off in your taxes…and it would be legit. 🙂

Sources?
Personally, I hate rumors. I can hope for these cool features, but when it boils down to it, rumors are rumors, and until Canon gives a news release on a firmware update, I’m not going to worry about something that may or may not happen in the future.
But that would be darn cool.

On the Magic Lantern’s Wiki Page, under the Vimeo video, there is a list of things that their firmware update addresses, which includes audio level.

Intriguing. Does that mean you can essentially disable the AGC in the camera and control the lvls yourself? Idk…if so that would be a really good step in the right direction.
Honestly, I would get a separate audio recording device and do it that way anyway. I like the Alesis ProTrack for the iPod Touch. For me, having a recorder that can take xlr (phantomed if need be) and 1/4 jack cables, 16-bit, 44.1kHz or 22kHz stereo digital audio…sheer audio gold. It would work with my fictional iPod touch that I imaginably own.

Well, if you’re on a Mac, use FCP, and don’t mind shelling out some cash, you can get https://www.singularsoftware.com/autosync/. From what has been said, it works very well. If your not using FCP, well…I’m sure they are working to get PluralEyes working on other NLEs.
*Possible Solution*
In your NLE of choice, would it be possible to change the speed of the audio by a percentage to match the video? Like, if you have to speed up the audio by 99.98% or something. Wouldn’t that work? I know in Premiere you can do that, and even have the option of keeping the pitch.
From a guy not knowing exactly about this problem, I am actually stunned that it’s only 7-8 frames off when recording for 10 minutes. Neato.

Unfortunately, with all kinds of new gear, you normally can’t just buy one piece of equipment and expect it to integrate into your workflow perfectly. I am the perfect example if we take the nanoFlash.
I simply cannot work with the massive amount of bits this glorious hick-a-ma-bobber is lovely for. My “setup” is nothing but a homemade PC (it’s a good-un, but not good enough), a canon GL2, a Canon XTi and various other things that can get me by with my really low end work. I get by. I ‘m using what I have now, to save up and get better stuff that would be appropriate for my work. Key words here…”what I have now” and “appropriate”. I’m not going to go out and on credit, buy every dream piece of equipment I can think of. And for me to even do good HD editing, that would most likely mean changing my computer, storage speed/space, upgrading my breakout box, a better monitor…then I would most likely get the GY-HM100U…the 700U if I feel fancy enough :). OR! If Magic Lantern does what we all like him to do to Canon’s 5DMKII or the 7D, and use the nanoFlash, that would be better.
Yeah, Nexto DI among other things would be great. Although I’m super wishful like we all are…I still use what I have.
Money trees would cause inflation anyway 😉
