Depends on if you’re trying to get a job or market yourself as a freelancer or a “production company.” If you’re taking the freelance route, I’d recommend that you know enough to a) get the job done, b) explain to a newbie what you’re doing, and c) fix your own problems.
C) Something will break, or you’ll find a “feature,” or the client will give you content in a weird format… But never blame the software or your hardware — especially in front of a client, because this makes you look like you’re out of control. Most times, it’s enough to know how to ask the Google for help and be fearless enough to fix issues on your own.
B) There’s an optometrist who my parents took the whole family to for years. He’s a good eye doctor, but my mom explained why she prefers him — he explains things in a way that makes her feel smart. Explaining the process to your clients in a manner that makes them feel smart and involved (as much as they want to be) helps them feel comfortable with you.
I’m just a young’un… this is some of what’s worked for me so far.

If you’re getting IDX batteries, I assume you’re in Europe? The HM700 is sold with an Anton Bauer mount in North America.
Regarding the lens, it just depends on what you need. The Fujinon is a very good zoom lens with a good track record on their HD200 and HD250 cameras, and it has a bit more zoom length than the Canon. The Canon is a bit wider, and it breathes just as much if not more than the Fujinon.

The best exercise I got in school was working as the C camera op for a documentary shot in an elementary classroom for two hours a week for a semester and a half. The director gave me feedback every week on what I shot, and he took the tripod and monopod away from me after a few weeks. It forced me to at least get quick at framing decent shots at a rapid pace.

Yeah, YellowPages subs out their video work to TurnHere, who subs out their work to little regional companies. Couldn’t remember their name at first.
It’s easy work, and their standards are pretty low. And you don’t have to put in the effort to go find clients. If you want to do cheap, local videos, it’s probably best to plug into something like TurnHere who already has a marketing machine in action, rather than doing advertising on your own.

According to the manual, no. You can’t get a SD signal out of the component terminals.
However, you can get SD out of the Y terminal as a component signal. Check page 114 in the manual for settings.

I agree with Mark — post effect is easier and safer. Check with your insurance company before setting anything on fire.
However, some practical light from the toaster will help the post effect look convincing. You could use a strobe off-camera, or rig up some LED lights controlled by buttons that you can flicker.

I just switched from QuickBooks to Clarityaccounting.com for this year. It’s all web-based, like Gmail or Google Docs, and it’s cross-platform (unlike QuickBooks ActiveX-based web system). I haven’t been using it enough yet to comment authoritatively on it, but I already like that I can access it anywhere, from my Mac editing system or my Windows netbook.
