I think I answered my own question. If motion blur is turned on in the render settings, it will add motion blur to retimed clips with optical flow, when they start dipping below 100% speed.

Indeed. Actually, Andy, in your position, if you want to upgrade and you can’t justify buying Studio, get the new version of Final Cut Express. Realtime performance is great, it comes with a lot of the FCP FxPlug filters, and it still gives you the ability to keyframe motion and effects. And it supports HD, should you ever need it.

How does this work, practically? Do you hire a freelance “art director” for a project, or would a production company have someone like that in-house? Do they just do “design” and hand over the swatches/sketches/storyboards to the people who run AE and FCP to build? Or would the art director create the AE or FCP assets and then give them to the editors to insert into the program?

I caught some flu-ish virus this weekend, so I wasted far more time in front of the TV than usual. Observations…
* Bloom and Dazzle -like transitions on networks with a lot of reality-based programming like HGTV, TLC, BRAVO, etc. Is that coming into style? It just seems like an easy, cheap trick.
* Mythbusters interludes and titles are consistently clever and fun. I want to meet whoever designed them someday and buy them a beer. Most of it looks like practical shots — no CG.
* The “Fringe Text” look seems like the next development of text tracking in 2D, kind of like the titles for Psych in the first two seasons. It’s kind of a cool concept in its simple-looking application on Fringe — it never breaks the viewers eye out of the point of view of the camera to a 2D lower-third.

Your studio space sounds similar to one of the places we’re considering. What advice do you have for inexpensively converting a space like this?
Actually, I was reading that thread a few days ago. That, and the need to keep a psychological separation between my work and my life is important. Or maybe not — maybe I should be focusing all of my energy on developing my skills and business at this point?
[Franklin McMahon] “You are of course focused on studio and lights and things, but really my best suggestion would be really putting a lot of thought into how and where you will interact with clients once they arrive for a meet. There is a whole art to it (from the initial greeting, offering a beverage, starting on time, outlining objective of meet, etc) and its worth really focusing on.”
That’s one of my primary reasons for finding some office space — making my clients more comfortable and helping them trust me and my abilities. What else do you think helps make clients comfortable and relaxed? Fridge with sodas? Sofas or office chairs? Artwork? Liquor cabinet? 🙂
Grin — when you meet with clients, do you meet in your home, or do you meet somewhere else (restaurant, coffee shop, bar, etc)?

Check around at your college before you order directly from Apple. Some colleges (particularly big ones) have negotiated better academic version discounts with Apple, so you might be able to save a couple hundred by ordering through your school. Good luck!

There’s not a specific plug in for this, but you could probably accomplish what you’re describing by keyframing the Chroma Keyer built in to Final Cut. What would you like to use the effect for?

About the interference sound…
Do you have a cell phone with Cingular/AT&T (or something else with GSM)? GSM radio frequencies have a nasty tendency to interfere with A/V equipment.
