Nope. Because if something goes wrong and you brick the camera, you’ll be paying whatever the rental houses policy is on the broken/defective equipment (price of the camera + fees).

I would not attempt to run ML on anything except my own gear, knowing full well what the risks are.

I would go through Prelude. You can select all your shots, setup your transcode setting (presets from AME) and then queue it to AME. It will still take time to process the handoff but it may be faster than straight into AME.

I’ve also noticed that if I take footage directly off my card and into AME it’s much slower than if I copy the card off to a hard drive (or RAID) and then add it to AME. Likely tied to the connection speed of how I’m accessing the card, as well as the read speed of the card itself (SxS, CF, SD, etc.).

I would guess this as well if one engine renders fine while the other doesn’t. OpenCL still has some bugs to work out in comparison to CUDA. I’m sure over time they’ll get squashed, but that doesn’t necessarily help for today. There’s a reason they say, “Living on the bleeding edge…” cause you’re typically the one bleeding as you discover all the problems! 🙂

Can you ingest DNxHD footage into Premiere? Can you export DNxHD from Premiere (don’t go to AME)?

If so, the problem may just be with AME. You may just need to do a reinstall of AME CC. If that doesn’t work have you contacted Adobe Support?

Yes you could do it, but you might get bit when trying to export the footage. The MBA doesn’t have a lot of horsepower to export video. So even something simple like processing that color correction for export may take an inordinately long amount of time. It really depends on what your deadlines are like. If you can leave it working overnight then no problem. But if you shoot something at 1PM and it need to be on air by 4PM…then I’d recommend getting more horsepower for encoding.

But playback on a current MBA shouldn’t be a problem (though you may notice some stuttering if you drop AE comps or color correctors onto the footage). Straight cuts and dissolves though shouldn’t be a problem for you.

Sorry to hear about your data loss. I’d first look to replace your card reader. We use Kingston card readers here at our office, without issue.

You can use data recovery software to attempt to recover the files. I’ve had pretty good luck with Data Rescue – https://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php

When an image is deleted from a hard drive or flash drive there are still residual bits of information left behind (kinda like erasing a chalkboard…you can still see some of the image left behind). So it’s possible that you may be able to salvage some of your shoot. It takes the software some time to process over the card and then displays to you what it can recover. The names of the files won’t look like anything you’ve seen so you’ll have to watch them to see, but it’s a lot better than losing everything.

In the future, like James suggested, just copy the file directly off the card using Finder. If you want an application that’ll backup the card use something Red Giant’s Bulletproof – https://www.redgiant.com/products/all/bulletproof/ – or ShotPut Pro – https://www.imagineproducts.com/?main_page=product_info&products_id=2

Those software packages provide a way to copy data, backup, etc. May be worth the investment for future jobs.

No. The OS is standard regardless of what computer it came with. If you want the F-keys to act like F-keys you’ll need to modify your System Preferenes.

First is that check box (or you can hold down the “Fn” key on your laptop to produce the same effect), but you may also need to turn off the shortcuts of those F-keys under the “Shortcuts” tab under “Keyboard” in System Preferences.

All discs contain exactly the same OS. There is no difference if installing a MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, iMac or Mac Mini. You just need to tweak your system preferences until your happy. Just a matter of checking or unchecking boxes.

Use Adobe Media Encoder. There are presets built in there for you to use. The basics though – your data rate impacts both the quality of the video and the overall file size. The higher the data rate the better the video quality AND the larger the final overall file size. Conversely, the lower the data rate the worse the picture AND the lower the overall file size.

I would recommend spending some time reading up on compression and how it works. If you are responsible for delivering your final products to your clients then you need to beef up on how it works. There’s plenty of good information here on the Cow for compression or on Vimeo, YouTube, and Wikipedia.

Are you trying to monitor audio while you record? Or do you audio to playback separately from the A/V port when screening footage?

To enable audio monitoring while recording is not possible with standard Canon firmware. You can look into Magic Lantern if you’re willing to hack your cameras firmware (please be aware that this could completely disable your camera AND void your warranty). Unfortunately, Canon has not given its users this feature.

You’ll need to look in System Preferences under the Keyboard option. In there under the Keyboard tab look for a check box that says “Use all F1, F2, etc keys as standard function keys.” That box needs to be checked. Then that will revert the F-keys to acting as traditional F-keys instead of being tied to system OS tasks (like volume, brightness, etc.).
