Outputting mov vs outputting mp4
Hi everyone,
Freelance video editor here with a question about not only Premiere CS5.5, but also MPEG Streamclip. My current dilemma consists of the compression issues with Steamclip, but perhaps the solution can be found in Premiere.I’ve outputted the main video as an mov 1920×1080 file using the desktop settings to ensure the high quality of creating a master file. The end result is 13.53 GB, so I put it into MPEG Streamclip to convert to a manageable mp4 format that can be played off a network and off Brightcove.
By putting it into MPEG Streamclip at 100% quality, H.264 compression, and checking the box to de-interlace the video, the end result amounts to 86 MB. In other words, really, really shotty quality to say the least.
Why is MPEG Streamclip doing that to an mov file that size? This is not good for business as I’m doing this for a client of mine and it’s creating the worst quality video possible. I don’t want to lose his business, so the alternative might be outputting it directly out of Premiere as an mp4, but it’s not letting me keep the 1920×1080 resolution that he wants.
Any thoughts?

As an update, I am in fact able to output to mp4 format keeping the 1920×1080 resolution. The file seems less grainy and full of artifacts as before, but it still outputted to the size of 128 MB. Not sure if it’s to my liking let alone my client’s, but I’ll give him an update on the picture quality.
In the meantime, any input on the compression procedure, MPEG Streamclip vs no MPEG Streamclip vs another third party software, is appreciated.

Use Adobe Media Encoder. There are presets built in there for you to use. The basics though – your data rate impacts both the quality of the video and the overall file size. The higher the data rate the better the video quality AND the larger the final overall file size. Conversely, the lower the data rate the worse the picture AND the lower the overall file size.
I would recommend spending some time reading up on compression and how it works. If you are responsible for delivering your final products to your clients then you need to beef up on how it works. There’s plenty of good information here on the Cow for compression or on Vimeo, YouTube, and Wikipedia.
