On the topic of zooming, there is a lot of filmmakers who don’t like using it cause it looks old, but why does old automatically equal bad? For example, a lot of people like high key film noir lighting from old movies and want to try to emulate that style today.
So does old style zooming always equal bad, or what is most viewers problem with it exactly, just cause it’s different than what they are use to?

Okay thanks. How would a matt box solve it? Are you saying that I should have the matt box fold over the lens to create the aspect ratio borders? Would that cut down on light entering the lens though if it’s folded over that much?

Okay thanks, but I tried this before, and the problem with tape is, that it covers up the camera’s information, such as ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc.
I mean there is clear tape, but then I wouldn’t see it when trying to shoot faster action scenes though, and it would be difficult to frame. So is there anyway to get black bars on the top and bottom of the monitor screen, and still be able to see the information?

Yeah that’s what I mean is can I crop it in camera.
The problem with doing it in post, is that I still have to frame it in the correct aspect ratio while shooting. If I save it for post, then it is not correctly framed. Is there anyway I can get the aspect ratio in the camera before shooting in order to be able to frame it correctly?

Oh I think I know what you mean, are you saying that I have don’t have enough L cuts, because of the new pauses? I put in the pauses cause I was told before that it flows too quick without enough pauses.
But if I need more pauses, that means there will be less L cuts in the dialogue though. Which is more important to have? L cuts in the dialogue, or more pauses?

Okay thanks. It’s funny you say to use L cuts cause a lot of the cuts are L cuts and J cuts. Are there any places where I missed using an L or J, cause I couldn’t find any?
Also, the music composer is going to compose the music once I have the final cut, that way he can time the music correctly of course.
But should he compose the music beforehand, and I should time it to his music? We’ve done a couple of rough drafts of music so far, but I changed the timing a lot, cause it was too quick before, so I wanted to get that down first, so the composer has a final cut to work with.
Isn’t a movie normally edited first to a final cut, then the composer does the score?

Oh okay, that’s interesting to know.
When it comes to choosing a slider, I would probably want the longest one I can get, and I was thinking of getting a 4 foot long one.
However, if I wanted to do a push in, on a slider that long, what focal length of lens would I need to zoom in past 4 feet of slider track? Would an 85mm do it, or would I need a longer lens than that?

Okay I tried taking screenshots, but I’ve never done this before and I read instructions on how to do it, but when I do, nothing happens. I will keep trying.
