  • Just finished a long project with mixed frame rates and it was very painful! After long hours with Adobe tech support, here is what I found. You CAN NOT mix frame rates on the timeline and expect them to conform, even if you try and modify prior to dropping on timeline. You first have to use encoder to change the frame rate and output a new clip. Then import to project and drop into the timeline. Then and only then will everything play well together and output correctly.

I have used Final Cut Since it first came out and it has been an enjoyable experience. This release was a true disappointment and consumers were not totally informed of its limitations. After 40 years in the profession and several EMMY’s & Telly Awards to my credit, I think I am qualified as a professional. This is not a professional product and have therefore requested a refund from Apple also. I would love to be a fly on the wall at Apple right now and hear the dialog about Final Cut “Pro” X.

Here it is Oct 22nd and we are still waiting. Whats wrong with this picture? Hearing the word “soon” is getting real old. They can move to new facilities, go to Europe for conferences, but not get customers new drivers in a timely manner! Frustrating!

If you are buying new MAC’s forget AJA. Their drivers do not work with FCS3. Upon release we were told “soon” and three weeks ago i was told two weeks. We are still no closer to drivers and the information pipe is dead. Plenty of other options to choose from that do in-fact work with the new system. We have given up on AJA in our post facility and moved on…happily!

This whole situation is getting more and more ridiculous every day. No way is there any reason that customers should have to wait this long for updates to what is suppose to be one of the companies flagship items. I have been through the upgrades of all sorts since the birth of nonlinear with the EMC and this is by far the worst i have ever seem.

Why couldn’t they post a beta version and we could be testing it for them in the field. Certainly if its only one, maybe two weeks away, they must have a beta version ready. We have been editing with snow leopard and fcs3 since they came out. Together they seem to be stable and are working fine with our drives, cards and even our P2 Store device. I shoot regularly on a PDW 700 and have no problem ingesting full 10-bit XDCAM into the system and editing. So currently the only “boat anchor” if you will is the IoHD box which has left us dead with projects we ran through it prior to upgrade.

The upgraded FCS and Snow Leopard was not a big secret. If AJA is working with APPLE, then this should have been ready to go in a REASONABLE amount of time. I can not wait any longer and the lack of consistent communication has forced us to go another direction with our accessories. Another two weeks would start costing us clients.

May 13, 2009 at 4:18 pm in reply to: 720P 59.94 to DVD

Well, i have the xdcam 59.94 mixed wiyh some HDV 2.97 on a timeline, i then have it dropped into an SD timeline, which is also 59.94. Then it is exported to compressor in the normal fashion. DVD burns look terrible. SD timeline will not allow us to select 29.97 due to the 59.94 footage.

  • Why couldn’t you take the original 1080i60 sequence and nest it into another sequence that is set to SD NTSC standards. FCP scales it and it still looks fine.

They are still the most reliable for producing broadcast programs in an uncompressed format. Fiber Channel will be the next investment when these reach their limits.
