August 5, 2010 at 4:24 pm in reply to: EX1 zebra advise needed! Stage show exposure problemsDon, Daniel,
Sincere thanks for all your help. I’ll be taking some test footage this evening and will incorporate your suggestions. Don, the link was very insightful – I printed out your bullet points and will bring them with me.
Just one elementary question. As noted previously, this is the first camera I’m using that has 2x different zebra settings. So if I set one to 80% (facial highlights) and the other to 100%, exactly how should I work the iris to control? Open/close until there is just a hint of a zebra on the 80% scale? (and stay away from anything in the 100% area)
Many thanks again – between re-reading the manual for the umpteenth time, viewing the camera usage DVD, your help here and test footage this evening, I should finally get some top quality exposures from the camera.

Mike,
Many thanks for your comments.
I suspect I did not explain myself as clearly as I could have:
I recorded 2x separate mono channels.
- One channel is a clear and isolated stage mic of the talent.
- The other mono channel is an audience mic that has both the talent and audience (I was not successful isolating just the audience on this 2nd mono channel).
So is there a way to take the two channels, mix to cancel out the talent (channel 1) from the talent/audience mix (channel 2) for a resultant of a mono channel with just audience? (as much as possible)

March 17, 2010 at 3:58 pm in reply to: AVCHD vs. XDCAM : workflow & quality comparisonNoah,
As always, I appreciate all of your insight, comments and time to respond.
Perhaps I should have elaborated on my “due diligence”, research for this purchase. I’ve spent a few months scouring the internet, but also speaking with colleagues and other users. The bottom line is; there really wasn’t a definitive “smoking gun” to go one way or the other. The top criterion is footage quality for potential future broadcasts. While many might then immediately say the EX1R, I wanted to really give the HMC150 fair consideration. Since funds are not my clients first concern (however a very close 2nd) , I’m looking to go with the EX1.
I’m a DVX100A disciple, so naturally I lean towards Panasonic. One thing I’m very disappointed in (not that this weighed in on the decision) was the HMC150 did not accept DVX batteries! I invested in many long life batteries. That doesn’t sit well with a loyal buyer.
Perhaps, no I am, just a bit nervous right now, needing to make the call and commit the funds (actually not my funds, but my counsel and reputation on the line, which has a higher value). So I’m not just flipping a coin, but needing to pull the trigger and reaching out just once more.
Thanks again

Noah – many thanks for your comments – I appreciate your expertise and time.
I’m a little confused, if the DVX100A produced footage of high enough quality for broadcast TV, why not the next generation? Can’t I bump up in Final Cut?
I guess we are comparing apples to oranges, but how would the simple letter box footage of the DVX100A compare to the 720p or 1080i 16:9 footage from the HMC150? I’ve been using the DVX100A for a few years now for stage shows and have broadcasted on local, and a network (twice). I suspect my questions are pretty naïve, but I just can’t seem to find the definitive article or review to sell me on the HMC150. I’d love to get them, but if the quality isn’t there, perhaps I have to look elsewhere.
I lost track of all of the Panasonic HD camera models. What would be the next model up from the HMC150?

Noah… one word… BRILLIANT!!! That goes under the heading of..”why didn’t I think of that?”!
Many thanks – that just saved me some $$. I haven’t used the remote, ever – still in the original packing, battery never inserted – I’ll try out now, before the shoot.
Thanks again

Noah – I’m looking for the zoom and perhaps focus function – any ideas for a inexpensive solution? I don’t use a crane that often, but will next week.
do you think this will work? https://www.markertek.com/Home-Theater/Remote-Controls/V-REMOTE.xhtml?LANC-1

December 11, 2009 at 2:26 pm in reply to: HD Project: Sony Vegas or Final Cut Pro? Why?Everyone,
I greatly appreciate everyone’s feedback, comments & suggestions. Thanks you so much for your time and consideration.
FYI: I’ve been active on the Sony Vegas forum for years, and did in fact submit the same post soliciting comments. My virtual friends there have been great, but no true compelling argument could be made to stay. Bottom line: It needs to be a business decision.
While I remain loyal to Vegas and all those on the forum who have been so incredibly supportive over the years, I believe my decision is made: I’m diving head first into the FCP world! It’s been a wrenching process, but it’s time.
Sincerely, thank you all again – looking forward to becoming a FCP member and contributing to your forum.

I just went through the “buying a 2nd hand DVX100A” experience. I researched for a few months before going with someone on Craigslist. I’m not sure you have it in Israel or not. As Noah commented, from everything I read 1200 hours seems to be a LOT. You can find one with just a few hundred hours all over the place (Craigslist, eBay, etc).
What would concern me most is not only the hours, but what kind of hours? I had to meet my seller face-to-face to see how he handled the camera, etc. It’s a fine, yet delicate instrument. NO WAY would I buy a rental! For even half the price they are offering I’d run away. What are you going to do when the heads fail? They can’t last for much longer. Folks who rent don’t care. Imagine the abuse and neglect it must have taken. It’s like buying a rental car with 50K miles. DON”T DO IT!
