I would create a ProRes HQ sequence that is 1024×576 and has square pixels. From there, I would export it using compressor for DVD.

For your 4×3 version, I would suggest either using compressor to letterbox it or just putting the 16×9 sequence in a 4×3 sequence in FCP or Motion to letterbox it.

You nailed the biggest difference. If you’re finishing at 1080P, I’d go for the 3000 for sure if you can.

Another difference is that the 3000 comes standard with the AVCIntra card and the 2000 needs it as an upgrade.

I’ve also heard that the 3000 doesn’t shoot at 720, only 1080, but hopefully someone can verify that.

I would first go into FCP and choose the codec you want to digitize to from the easy setup. That will automatically change the Kona Control Panel to that setting when you’re in FCP.

As far as deck control goes, is your VTR in Local or Remote?

Also, just double check your cables to make sure the in and out connectors are all set up right.

I haven’t heard of anyone having problems with head by having a fully populated bus. You would see better performance by installing another FW800 card than using all of the drives on the same bus. FW800 tops out pretty quickly if you’re doing quite a bit of stuff on it.

If you have three drives stripped as a RAID 0, then you’re probably getting somewhere around 200MB/sec read off of them. If you have ProRes 1080P files, then you’re dealing with somewhere around 30MB/sec. So you would max out at a theoretical 6 streams of ProRes.

If you set up a faster RAID, say 400-500MB/sec, then you could theoretically do 10-15 streams of ProRes.

But at some point, it’s going to be too much for your processor depending on what FX you have in your sequence.

So what are your RT settings currently for quality? Dynamic, High, Medium, Low? I personally can’t stand to edit with the Frame Rate set to anything but high, so that’s when I render.
