Good insights Neil. The implementation in Compressor/FCP for Blu-ray is perfect for me. I’ll even use it now when I’m created DVDs. As I’ve mentioned 95% of the discs I burn are very simple. I believe you can even set up chapter points in it. That’s great for most editors!

I completely agree. That matches the Apple model. It’s a great product and it’s the right size company. If DoStudio wanted to really get Apples attention, then they should start programing it for Mac. That could be the best business move they could make.
Having visited with the Final Touch guys at their headquarters, I can tell you that getting bought by Apple seemed to be their business plan. That was their goal. It worked too!

As you’ve pointed out, there are several ways that Apple could innovate with the interface. And seeing your perspective, I think your criticism is valid.
I think I’ve been caught up in what has appeared to me as a bunch of users that have been criticizing FCS3 based on what they hoped Apple would do. Much of what I’ve heard has seemed to be more about whinnying and moaning instead of people looking deep into the upgrade to see what’s really there and how they can use the tool. Many of those people sound like Apple owes them something, like a free Blu-Ray authoring application.
Anyways, I’m very excited about FCS3 and looking forward to a FCS4 someday.

To add to that ProRes 4×4 is a superior format to those two. 12-bit with option of alpha channel. A ProRes 4×4 copy on a drive is a higher standard than a HDCAM SR tape. It’s really going to give the industry a shake up (at least on an independent level).

I think it’s cool that SD ProRes Proxy is like 1.25MB/sec at 480/24P. 4GB/hour. That will make a lot of people happy.

That would be very cool. Have you ever told Apple? Use the feedback menu item and suggest it.

Check out my post on this. I still think Apple will do something more extensive with Blu-Ray authoring, but they obviously have their reasons. Whether you need it or not, Apple is making business decisions. Notice that no Mac comes with a Blu-Ray option yet. There is a larger issue at hand. They obviously know it’s important to the client base, that’s why there is the basic authoring in Compressor/FCP now.

Performance on full screen sharing is poor for video. This really is a banner update that will really allow my facility to stand out from others.

Being an original Final Touch user, the app became stable once Apple go it. That was a great step!

Not trying to be rude, but what would this buy you? Would you be a better colorist if the Color interface would be more like the DVD Studio Pro interface? At best, it would probably save a few seconds there and there because of more consistent file/menu layout. I think it would be nice too if things felt more cohesive, but would it change the way I work? The apps are still quite powerful and they continue to improve.

The more I get into learning about the update, this falls more into the line of trailblazing than treading water. I do see that you’re disappointed though. I think this has more to do with how Apple has marketed and hyped FCP upgrades in the past. I think that it has set an expectation on when upgrades should come and how big or revolutionary they should be. Now that they’re changing their approach, it’s understandable that they’re not meeting so many people’s expectation on what the upgrade “should be”.
Heck, for $300, this upgrade is a steal and a no-brainer!

Looks like you skipped over the part where I suggested converting it to ProRes Proxy. If your files are 24P then it’s only 4 MB/sec. That’s only 16GB/hour.
Yes, it’s bigger than editing native AVCHD files, but it’s much better than the previous alternatives of ProRes or AIC. Plus, these files will be much more edit friendly than if FCP could edit AVCHD natively.

The more I start digging into the details, the more I realize how good of an upgrade this really is. I’ll start compiling a list of features that I’ll quickly learn that I never could have lived without as soon as I can get it installed.
