Thanks for this info Mike. This particular clip looks fine to me in the PPro environment (after rendering the effect, in the monitor window). Luckily, in this interview the lighting is controlled (no natural light), and the subject’s movements are minimal, but if the light catches his face differently as he moves in other clips, I can imagine that there might be some blips on the radar–flashes or whatever?

Is there another correction effect that also improves the “flatness” that is more stable across frames? Thanks-

Thanks for the link–I just briefly scanned it and it will be very useful, but I think I need to understand the whole 24p/30p/60i/progressive etc thing at an even more basic level to really understand the whole variety of choices offered. Can you suggest any other links?

Also–can the 24p footage and other choices be captured and edited in PPro 1.5? Altered in AE 6.5? Other compatibility issues to take into consideration (e.g. graphics card, DVD authoring or other software compatibility, etc)?

Lastly, what do you think about the differences between DVX100a and DVX100b?

Great–thanks a lot guys–I can stop worrying. Oddly enough, clips freshly captured clips in PPro look normal when viewed on the WM player, and stretched when viewed on the Real Player. Go figure…

At any rate, if the reason it looks stretched is because a Pixel Aspect ratio of .9 is used for NTSC-television viewing (where it’ll look normal) and the image is being viewed on a computer monitor, once the clip is incorporated into a finished DVD production viewed on a computer, why wouldn’t that AE’d clip look stretched? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Thanks a lot for this reply. I actually did try the clone tool and was able to improve the situation by cloning out the very top of the vase which was the most distracting part, but as she moves her head more of the vase is revealed, so it is still distracting. I’m not sure how to keyframe the cloneing so it doesn’t just pop onto the screen where I put it after moving the timeline marker. Do you know?

Also–don’t know how to key something out–particularly when the shape of it changes over time as she moves her head in front of it. Suggestions?

Thanks all. I completely agree–difficult enough to engage a subject without asking them to converse with empty space. Just sort of forgot that a) I could actually turn the LCD screen all the way out and sit on the side to interview the subject and STILL till monitor the shot. Better yet, I remembered there is a remote control (that I’ve never used) to tighten or widen the shot. Yee haw. Thanks for the inspiration.

The black bars appear in both QT and Real Player viewers when looking at the AVI. They also appear in the finished DVD using those clips.

Problem is–I didn’t choose a widescreen preset. I chose the standard 4:3, 720 x 480 preset. That’s why this problem is so maddening–I can’t figure out the cause. Any other thoughts greatly appreciated.

That is just so strange. I know that the GL2 has much better resolution than the GL1, and my GL2 does not do this, but it seems bizarre to me that it would create footage that reads on a computer (not t.v. because the non-action safe area cuts it off)as having two black stripes down the sides. I called Canon factory tech folks and they had never heard of this issue.
Does anyone know of a workaround?
