The Quicktimes have the same sync problems

  • Wow . . . . . I just got home, checked my email, and was surprised at what I stirred up.

For those of you who gave what help you were comfortable with I appreciate it.

For those of you whom I offended or frightened with questions of legality I apologize.
However, as Shane said “there are legitimate reasons for importing commercial DVDs…”. And this is one of those legitimate reasons. I believe this falls under fair-use.

This is for a tribute to an actor (I believe it’s invitational, not paid). I’m looking for a few short clips of that actor.
The clips will probably not total more than 5-10 minutes in a 2 hour tribute.
I’m clearly NOT trying to rip an entire watch-able movie . . . . in fact my post specifically asked how to AVOID importing the entire movie
“I’d like to be able to select just the 2 minutes I need of each movie (not spend hours ripping 20 entire movies)”

In a sense it’s sort of a demo reel for the actor (a legitimate reason to import clips) . . . . it’s just going to be shown at a tribute instead of an agent’s office.

I hope that puts some minds at ease.

And for those of you who offered help, thank you.

January 27, 2009 at 8:46 pm in reply to: Help capturing footage from a JVC BR-HD50U??

    Thanks for everyones input.

I’m having two other problems now.

    1) No audio preview on Capture of Standard Def tapes
When I capture the NTSC tapes I see the video in the preview window, but cant hear audio. When I capture I can see the video being captured but still can’t hear anything.
But Audio is there and sounds fine on the captured clip.

I’ve got the AJA IO box turned off. I’ve tried switching Audio out put to “Built in Line out” – That’s what I usuually use when AJA is turned off. I’ve also tried “FireWire DV” for the Audio output setting.

I’d like to be able to hear the audio s I capture so I can make notes as it records.

    2) No deck control. . . . . any suggestions??
I set Device Control to “FireWire NTSC Basic” and I switched the deck to “Remote”.
I powered down the deck and closed the capture window when I set these.

Deck control is not as important to me but It would help

    Thanks

January 17, 2009 at 2:20 pm in reply to: How do I capture HD footage from a JVC BR-HD50U???

Thanks guys . . . . . . I definitely did switch the DV-HDV switch while the deck was on and running. Any chance I got lucky and did not damage the FireWire??

    1) How do I tell for sure if I damaged the FireWire circuit??
Is there any way to tell if a FireWire protection circuit was ever installed on my unit??

    2) Does Anyone have thoughts on using an HDMI cable and going through my AJA IO/HD box??
If the FireWire circuit is damaged perhaps I can Capture that way???

    2) Any other comments on the “Capture & Device Settings”??
I’ll try the “Easy Set Up” recommended by Dino, but if anyone has any other knowledge of the Capture settings for this deck I’d love to hear it.

    I purchased the music on I tunes . . . . I can put it on a different system.
Any suggestions on converting the music to a different format so I don’t need Quicktime 7.5.5

September 25, 2008 at 10:31 pm in reply to: How do I import Panasonic P2 Media in to Avid

    Thanks for everyone’s help.
    I have several new questions.

Can I tell what Frame Rate/Format the footage was shot in?
I was told the footage was shot in 720p/24pn
    I created a project that is 720p/23.976.
When I look at the “Clips to Bin” import, the heading for Video=HD720p/60 . . . huh???
Does this mean the footage was actually shot in 720p/60 frame rate???

    Can I mix frame rates within a project . . . or a sequence?????
It may be that some of the footage was shop 24pn and some shot 60p.
If that is the case can I mix the frame rates?
Do I need to Transcode to get the footage all the same??
Can I transcode within the Avid . . . . . or do I need to use other software (such as Raylight MXFX)???
    Any tips??

Why don’t I have different Transcode options??
I select imported clips and go to Clip/ Transcode-Consolidate . . . . I then select “Transcode” . . . But under “Target Drive Resoloution” it only gives me one option: “DVCPRO”, the same codec the clips were shot in

What is a good Low Resoloution . . . and work flow for Up-Res on the Final Sequence???
If I decide to work in a lower resoloution (for drive space and performance) does anyone have a suggestion for a resoloution to work in???
What is the work flow (Import Clips to Bin / Transcode)??
Then what is the work flow for re-linking the final sequence to the HiDef Full resoloutin media??

What if I want to deliver in Uncompressed HD???
The director wants to deliver in uncompressed HD (90 min Documentary film).
How do I do this? . . . . . Do I cut my sequence then Transcode the Final Sequence??
What if I decide to off-line in a Lower resoloution??

September 24, 2008 at 6:24 pm in reply to: How do I import Panasonic P2 Media in to Avid

    Thanks for the insight.
It sounds like if I transcode to DNxHD there would be no need to work in low resoloution (for space or performance issues) . . . Is that correct??

If I trascode the raw footage to DNxHD what does the work flow look like?

    1) I import the clips to a bin

    2) watch the footage (media is still on external hard drives) and make selects.

3)??????? At this point you usually then Import P2/Media . . . . but if I’m transcoding what do I do???

Is transcoding to DNxHD much more time consuming than importing the media to local drives in native DVCPRO-HD resoloution??

Also if I’m working in DNxHD what format and frame rate do I select when creating the initial project (the footage was shot in 24p frame rate)??

I forgot to ask if I need a NITRIS to work in HD resoloution (or will an Adreniline work for HD) .

I currently have an Adrenelin box.
CPU is a Macintosh Pro, dual quad-core Intel Xenon processors

Can I work in either DVCPRO-HD or DNxHD resolutions on an Adreneline??
Or does the Adreneline require me to work in a lower resolution then re-link the final sequence to the HD footage??

Bottem line: Can I work in DVCPRO-HD or DNxHD with an Adreneline??

September 24, 2008 at 5:53 pm in reply to: How do I import Panasonic P2 Media in to Avid

Thanks for the link you sent (I’m checking it out)
Why do you perfer DNxHD over DVCPROHD?
Does the Avid choke in the DVCPRO resolution (and is it the DVCPRO codec that you are weary of or is it the 960×720 resolution)?
I guess I’m asking is the system less likely to choke when working in DNxHD?
    Does it choke at all??

Has anyone had experience with importing (or converting) to a low resolution for off line to save drive space and improve performance?? Is this worth it??
And how difficult is it to then relink your final sequence to the originial HD footage??
    What is the procedure??

Has anyone tried this, and if so did it work smoothly or were there snags??
